Can I use Speedlight SB-50DX with 400d

I am noobie to DSLR and I had 400d for almost a month now and not happy with inbuilt flash. I use my camera to take pictures of my 9 month old son and some family pictures

I have a flash SB-50DX which I bought in 2002 for my nikon N75 film slr.

I dont have enough to buy a new one and dont want to spend money until I really understand aobut DSLR.

lads, suggestions if SB-50dx will work with 400d and what would be difference in the new flashes and should i be looking to buy them down the road or I will be good with what I have for the pictures I am taking.

Not on the camera hot shoe. Sorry. Sell it and save for a canon flash like the 430 or 580. Sorry I cant tell you more than this.
