Putting a handle on the L bracket

Has anyone ever put a handle grip on the L bracket of their telephoto lenses? Are there commercially made ones available? One could cut the grip off a cheap mono-pod and use that.

If I have to hand hold my rig, a handle grip would help give some control (support).
