Managed to at last get out with my new 300 f/2.8L IS today and I must say it was a joy to use. I had it together with the 2x extender which I think is going to be my favourite setup - a lot of small birds here on Guernsey :) Makes a great combo with the 100-400 on the 2nd body. It wasn't too bad at all for hand-holding and I did several small walks along the seashore without problem, I did have the attached lens strap on though which makes a difference. For most of the afternoon I used it on a bean-bag on my car window. Anyway here's the 1st shot I've processed - like I say this is with the 2x attached and on the bean-bag. Normal PP done on the raw file with just a hint of USM.

Goldfinch f/5.6 @ 1/250th

Paul-
That's one of the best looking shots I've seen with a 2x extender. I've used the 1.4xII with great results but can't wait to use my 2x after seeing your post

Excellent. Please show 2-3 more, also true hand-held if you've got that.

Have you tried stacking TC's yet? That also works pretty well. Amazing.

Well to be honest, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but no I doubt it. I would have thought that would depend on the circumstances of the shot, tripod, beanbag or hand held, light quality, contrast etc etc. Another example from yesterday below- to me this one doesn't look quite as sharp as the first but still perfectly useable. Again this was taken using a beanbag out of my car, f/5.6 @ 1/800.

The ones I did take hand-held didn't really turn out  One thing I learnt yesterday is that the attached lens strap can sometimes knock the selection dial - I thought I was shooting in AV mode but the strap had knocked it to TV! Weather permitting I'll be out and about all next week so I'll post some hand held shots later.

Only briefly and the results were surprisingly good :)

Good job Paul. Those Goldfinches always look a tad evil to me, tho' no doubt they are real stunners too!

Not realistic trying to shoot with a 2x TCon handheld I don't reckon Petkal. Keeper ratio would be very low wouldn't it?

Beanbag in car set up is great. My favourite shooting mode for wildlife. Add a flask of coffee and you're sorted ;-)a

Paul, I will also answer your safari PM ... apologies! I did read it and then forgot until now
