Would this even be possible? Seems like someone could make some money... Just think of all those medium range primes and zooms that you can already handhold becoming handholdable at 2X with IS in the TCon.

Foremost, adding IS to a TC would certainly make it bigger and lose more IQ on the lens. Secondly, I'm not sure on this, but I think IS is customized for each lens regarding which element moves, etc. Thirdly, prices will have to shoot up to around $800 minimum for the IS version if it's possible. Lastly, Canon already has IS options for focal lengths from 24mm and up and the medium range primes can let in enough light that most of the time it's not necessary to add IS (and a lot more cost to each lens).

I really like this idea. not sure of the practicality. But I like the idea. Now if it could be made so there is not stop loss....:)

I would have to say that making it no stop loss/reduced stop loss would be even better than adding IS to it!

Yeah the idea sounds peachy fun but practically speaking I don't know.

I love Dante's idea of light gain. Maybe it would have a little MAG flashlight or something aimed at the sensor.

I'm obviously no engineer.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

I wouldn't want a TC, rather just a group of IS elements in a tc-like design without aperture loss that can make any lens into an IS lens. It could be insanely expensive..I wouldn't care. The benefit would be great. However, no doubt this would usher in a whole new line of lenses.

I can hear it now... the cries of foul from all those 70-200 IS owners... :D

Anyone know where the moveable elements in an IS lens actually sit? I've got a feeling it's the rear set which would make a combined TC/IS unit at least slightly feasible...

as for applying different stabilisation for different lenses - just think about the Leica M8 announcement with a new mount that can check the lens that is attached - no reason why Canon's system (which they must have as the EXIF data tells you what you used) couldn't be used by our TC/IS unit to modify it's performance...

This is sort of the wishing of a EFS lens going on a FF body. Might be possible but would never be feasable.
