Tamron 28 - 75 vs Sigma 17 - 70

Hi all - I am planning on buying a lens or possibly two to replace the kit lens with my 350D when I go to Hong Kong next week.
At the moment my inclination is to get the Tamron 28 to 75 as so many people speak well of it on this forum. However, I am a little concerned about not getting better quality at the wide end of the range too. Does anyone have experience of the Tamron 28-75 and Sigma 17-70. Would it better to get the latter - or should I be thinking of getting the Tamron 28-75 and another lens for the wide angle range - perhaps the Tamron 17 - 35?

Grateful for your views.

thanks

Les

For single lens, Sigma is strong candidate. Sigma for sure!

How bout the Tamron 17-50. It's a better comparison than the 28-75.

It's better to compare the 28-70 vs the Sigma 24-70.

I couple the Tamron 28-75 with the Sigma 15-30. Love them both! A couple comments: First, I am really glad to have the f2.8 at the long end. The extra speed is more important there since wide angle will tolerate lower hand-held shutter speeds. Second, I am keeping my options open for an eventual move to full-frame.

What camera body are you using? I've always thought the 15-30 would be a good lens to have...

The 15-30mm is a great and very much ignored lens. I would put it equal in IQ to the 17-40mm L, tho' USM is a nice to have. Otherwise, on this topic I agree with Grego ;-)a

I bought the Sigma 17-70 to replace my kit lens and so far im very happy with it. Everything from the image quality to the solid well-built feel of it. No complaints from me

I'm going to get a tamron 28-75 and ultra wide to make up for the lost wide angle spots. In all reality if I am shooting something creatively where I need that extra 10mm on the wide end, chances are I'de have to gear with me anyway.

The tamron 28-75 is not wide enough in my view. The Tamron 17-35 and 28-75 would make a nice combo, but the 17mm end of the tammy distorts a bit too. I think both the Sigma 17-70 and Tamron 17-50 distort less at the 17mm end. May want to check photozone.de to double check though.
Good luck

i've owned both of these lenses, and currently have the tamron. i do miss the wideness of the sigma, but the image quality of the tamron far exceeds it. my copy of the sigma had focus issues, it back focused by a bit. it also exhibited creep in both directions. it was nice while it lasted but i love the tamron so much. i went shooting with it today and had lots of keepers out of the pics i snapped.

I own the Tarmorn and have used my friend's Sigma. In terms of image qualities, the Tarmon is better (it also has constant f2.8, therefore a better lens for low light situations). However at the wide end, there is a hugh different between 18-28mm range. Since you mentioned you have the kit lens, how much do you use bt 18 & 28mm? If you only want ONE single lens and do use 18-28mm, Sigma would be a better choice. Another choice would be getting the Tarmon but use the kit lens for that particular range.

Tamron 17-50 is really nice, I've only had it a week, but really like it.
