Ahh, now I understand. The problem is that you are buying your equipment via normal chanels. This means that you get the "standard" quality L lenses that they sell to just anybody. I was under the impression that you were one of the serious collectors who have an "understanding" with Canon. If you don't have a CCC (Canon collectors card) then obviously your L's will just be everyday L's. If you buy them using the CCC numbers then the lenses are constructed by hand in a cat 10 clean room and then shipped in sealed boxes to your place of display.

The CCC also enables you to send your display items back for cleaning if you happen to pick one up, without gloves, for example. I believe they use an ultrasonic bath to remove any residual marks.

CCC's are only available via personal introductions, give me a call on 328-7448 and I will put you in contact with the right people. If you can't remember the number I'm sure you will find an easy way of memorising it.

Best Regards

BearSummer

I have laughed about 10 times reading this thread!

For those really tough stains on the lens that can't seem to wipe off, I just go to my garage, plug in my pressure washer, clamp my 24-70L on the big bike rack and spray away! If that doesn't work, nothing will. :)

Aww, I don't think you'd do that, Suzy.....I feel you love your brick almost as much as Cleptner likes both of his.;)

I love photography, but cleaning kills me. I'm the type of person who is certainly careful, but no matter what I do with my products, as soon as I take them out of the box, they get blemishes. It's like it magically happens. I guess I am not too nutty like some, like when I'm using the lens I do make sure when I'm switching the caps go on and it is done fast, but I have my eye mostly through the viewfinder, not on the lens to make sure it's okay.

I want some cleaning equipment. I guess I should just pick up a lens pen, it should do the trick.

My real issue with cleaning anything is they will get dirty. I constantly worry about clean things getting dirty, so I just purposely put finger prints on them and then I can clean them. So that they are clean, and then I worry about them getting dirty, so I just purposely put finger prints on them and then I can clean them. I like to take care of all the anxiety up front. It's bound to get dirty sooner or later - might as well get it over with on YOUR schedule! Take one shiny new lens off-roading, speckle it with mud with a liberal dose of sandy dust on the front element. Voila - no more worries.

If it absolutely must be clean, a bog-soaked, campfire-smelling t-shirt makes quick work of it!

best method (in my experience) is to let a younger sibling clean it for you. if you are lucky, the lens will look like new. hell it'll have a box and everything.. of course, i've never been lucky ;)

oh great carnak the magnificent, how about you give your mkII to your daughter (one's in highschool right?)?

I saw the subject line and knew this would be an interesting thread filled with incredibly useful information (har har). What I didn't know was that I would get to the last page of this thread and come to the conclusion that I am not even remotely as nuts as I used to think I was. You all are very amusing ...

For the kit lens like the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6, any of the above techniques will do to convince your wife to buy a better lens ;)

Could not resist!!!!
