i use a brillo pad smothered in piston grinding grease which is then dipped in builders sand, lenses come up a treat :)

Ahh, the ol' lapping compound method. Tried-but-true.

Ray, Ray, Ray,

Can't you do anything right? Did you forget the hydrochloric acid application to the lens and all its plastic parts? Come on now. I'm very busy at work and you're just wasting my time. ;) In fact, place all lenses and cameras in a bucket of this acid. Once it's done bubbling, they'll all be good as new.

And Peachman, if you're gonna give a recipe, you can't go leaving out the main ingredient. :)

mark

Well, I didn't want to be offensive...but the secret is mediteranian goat urine......(med because of the diet of olives which pass on the oil into the solution which helps lubericate the parts) ..about a cup of this pored in during the rinse cycle and yor're golden!;)

What a bunch of amateurs ! Peachy, that's so wrong !
Some weather sealed lenses become so only when coupled to Series 1 camera bodies, such as the 1DsMkII. Therefore, when cleaning a sealed lens in an autoclave, the lens must be mounted on a 1series body.

ya ..missed that:( ..hey the avatar has my attention...I'm loving it...Is it you as a youth trying to retreive a rinsed lens?:D :D

Surprised noone else uses this - I find a nice concentrated solution of HF does wonders for the lens' optical properties. Just set it in there for a couple of hours and not only is it spotless, but there's even zero lens flare under the worst imaginable conditions, and CA and residual barrel/pincushion distortion seem to be gone too.

As long as the lens bearings are lubricated and aperture fluid kept topped off...

At one of the first POTN New York meets, we had the pleasure of learning yet another lens cleaning method. Sumozebra (come to think of it, where has he been?) dunked one of his lenses in a very dirty pond and let it lay there at the bottom for at least 15 minutes while getting some staff members to fish it out. It had a goldfish swimming in it when it resurfaced in a net.

I hear it's still the cleanest lens he's got.

Always looking for new methods. What is HF?

That's the stuff that must not be imbibed by those whose marbles are glass.
You, my MD Jak friend, have nothing to worry about in that regard.

I'm going to have to research that statement. I have a 120 pound dog with low hanging ones. I'll let you know tonight if there's any smudges, fingerprints or scratches.

mark

What would be more alarming is how fingerprints got there in the first place. That would mean someone has been playing with your dog in more ways than one.

I have another idea. You know those little ultrasonic machines they use to clean eyeglasses at the optician? Just get one with a bigger tank, more cleaning fluid, pop the lens in there and zap it. Hey, even Canon believes in ultrasonics, they're all written on the outside of the lens. The better lenses too :P

HF has fallen from favor with the green crowd...seems it is best stored in Teflon containers...

I have to admit....I have never seen anything resolve a flare issue any faster. Perhaps if they develop a friendlier shipping and storage container it will spring back to favor.

Well, I find it important to drill some 1/4 inch holes in the body of the weather sealed ones to allow the same ventelation as the non-sealed while in the dryer and the drying time stays about the same...remember to fill the holes w/ set screws when you are done...

This lens cleaning is starting to get expensive! ;)

In the absence of a 1 series body, if I don't have the right size set screws could I just fill in the holes with some "Shoe Goo" instead?

Hydrofluoric Acid.

It can also be safely stored and shipped in wax or wax-lined containers, IIRC. They had to put it somewhere in the pre-Teflon days.

You have to be careful with using the shoe-goo...it picks up the metal filings that lay in my camera bag after I use a bastard file to clean the pine pitch off the lens barrel deposited there when I have been stocking moose thru the big pine forests and swamps of Maine.....and when on the shoe -goo, it rubs against the lenses the that have been thrown in together in the pillowcase I carry them all in...
