2GB should be fine. 1GB limit is a file size limitation on a video clip equivalent to about 8 minutes at top quality.

Elsewhere on this site is information on how 4 GB SD cards are above the size limit of normal SD but also posts by users who are happy with their non-standard 4GB cards on their S3 cameras.

EQUIPMENT: Canon Powershot S3 IS, 2x Transcend 2GB x150 SD, 2x 4GB Class 4 Dane-Elec SDHC, LensMate 52mm Adapter Tube and lots of stuff to hang on it.
A couple of flashes and a couple of strobes. My other camera is a Sony DSC-P200.

Before reading that article on 4GB size problems ("sticky"), I had bought an s3 and a 4GB 150x Ridata from meritline and have filled it several times. It formats at 3.8, and my s3 does stop at 1gb (if I press record again it will record another gigabyte, each time until I get to 3.8). I use it for video mostly. Is 1gb as far as the s3 goes as one video?

Thank you for all the answers. Seems it's riskfree to buy a 2GB card, so I'll buy a SanDisk Extreme II for the camera!

Just to add my confirmation to the others: I have the 2GB Sandisk Extreme III cards and they work flawlessly, and I also have a couple Transcend 4GB 150x cards (currently $99 at www.pcconnection.com (external link)) so I should never run out of space while shooting pictures.

Curiously, the 2GB cards work perfectly in my Palm Tungsten T5 PDA, but the 4GB cards don't , confirming that they're not totally compliant with the SD standard. But the 4GB cards do seem to be built to whatever part of the SD standard applies to photography, since they both work perfectly in my S3, and transfer pictures beautifully to my Epson PictureMate printer.

Mmm... you should read more about the cam you have ;)
The 1gb limit is because of the camera itself. I've an s2, and the movie file is also limited to 1gb per file....

It's not about the capacity of the sd card ;)

And it's normal it formats at 3.8... I use a 150x 512 Mb, and i don't have all those 512 Mb... It's always less. Even the 16mb card that came with the camera, doesn't format 16 mb... It's perfectly normal.

Greetings,

Makers of memory always do that, if you calculated 3.8 times 1024 kb you would get a number of 4.0000 etc, that makes 4 gb number.
Like I have a so called 80 gb hard drive, so thay claim, but its reported 77 gb by windows, again that calculation, 77 times 1024 makes up a number over 80 or so

I thought I might point out that there is no such thing as SanDisk Extreme II. There is the standard line, Ultra II, and Extreme III. I'm currently using a 2GB Ultra II in my S3. So far with movie mode or continuous shooting I have had no problems.

2GB cards are fine in the S2/S3. I have a 2GB 150X Transcend SD card in my S2 and it works flawlessly. Even better was the fact that it was only $32 or so at www.newegg.com (external link)

I have a scandisk ultra II 2gb and I was wondering why my video's have a glitch in them every 5 or six seconds... I wouldn't think this is normal. Canon new S3

One, it's SanDisk, not ScanDisk. Second, make sure to do a low level format of the memory card.

Ultra II vs. Extreme III - is there anyone out there that has tried both of these types? Does the S3 take advantage of the faster read/write speed of the Extreme III vs the Ultra II?

Thanks!
