Before reading that article on 4GB size problems ("sticky"), I had bought an s3 and a 4GB 150x Ridata from meritline and have filled it several times. It formats at 3.8, and my s3 does stop at 1gb (if I press record again it will record another gigabyte, each time until I get to 3.8). I use it for video mostly. Is 1gb as far as the s3 goes as one video?

Wait just a second, are you saying that the S3 supports SDHC? because the SD standard is 2GB. So one would have to use SDHC.

I don't know about SDHC, but I bought 2 4GB Transcend 150x cards from www.pcconnection.com (external link) and they work just fine in my S3.

It's obvious that they don't conform to the SD standard fully, though, since they don't work in my Palm Tungsten T5, while the Sandisk ExtremeIII 2GB cards work just fine in both my Tungsten T5 and my Canon S3is.

B&H have a Hoodman 4GB card for around $220 which is labelled Professional Performance Only and is rated at 150x -- I can't tell what the difference is between normal 150x such as the Transcend (which is currently selling for $99 at pcconnection.com) and the Hoodman which is over twice as expensive.

The $99 Transcend cards work just fine for my S3is.

Don't you need a SDHC specified card reader to use 4GB+ cards? It looks like the S3 can cope so I assume you download your photos via the S3 and not a card reader?

There's no such thing as a bad photo, just the wrong audience.
EQUIPMENT: Canon Powershot S3 IS, 2x Transcend 2GB x150 SD, 2x 4GB Class 4 Dane-Elec SDHC, LensMate 52mm Adapter Tube and lots of stuff to hang on it.
A couple of flashes and a couple of strobes. My other camera is a Sony DSC-P200.

I use the card reader in my computer (it's been in there for 2 years so it's most likely not a SDHC specified reader) and it can read the 4GB cards just fine.

That's great news. A 4GB card would be better for me than the 2x2GB I was going to buy for my S3.

Have you tried High Speed continuous shooting with the transcend card? Do you get any "please wait" messages within the first 50 or so shots?

Thanks

I just shot off 60 high-speed continous shots and there was no "please wait" message.

The S3 is not compatible with SDHC. It will recognise cards up to 4gigs.
