The shot with the walkway:
EOS 20D 1/1000 F1.4 ISO 200 AV mode

The shot in the field:

EOS 20D 1/6400 F1.4 ISO 100 AV mode

I shoot Raw and Small Jpeg. These were the small jpeg using in camera parameter set "2" and then resized in PSE4 and just before saving I hit them with USM 100%/0.9/1

I agree maybe there is good and bad copies....but I hear that about a lot of lenses and I haven't seen a bad one yet.

I had read about the focusing problems with this lens before I'd bought it (three days ago) and so the first thing I did was to try it out at 1.4.
this is the result shot RAW, 1/1000, ISO 200, 1.4 and AV mode.
I used slight USM to sharpen it.

Oh so sorry Blam - my mistake, I thought the general thread question was on the softness of the 1.4 setting which so many people had remarked on, and how so many people were unhappy with how their lenses focused in general at this aperture, and whether they felt that they had a duff copy of it.
I haven't had a chance to try out any long distance photos as I've only just got the lens.

I like mine. It is SHARP! I will admit there is a lil smart sharpening on this image. Just normal workflow.

i think it's time for a manicure for someone...
beautiful dog.. beautiful shot.

i'd like to see some shot at 1.4 from a distance of 5-10ft. then we'll see how sharp it really is, or if any CA or soft problems.

She is an old girl, but still looks good. Yeah, it is nail cutting time. I really have not shot too many images with the 50. I will be taking some this weekend (hopefully) and will post.

my lens is razor sharp when stopped down a bit.

seems that it might be backfocussing though =( I wish I had more time and subjects to shoot
