The first four pictures posted in this thread were taken with the EF 300 f/4.0L USM (non-IS).

Sorry Petkal, I should have said...

- more pics from this lens please :)

I'm getting a used one next week and want to see some great pics from it.

I see that you prefer this over the IS, especially you have IS built-in hands. :D

Really, how handholdable is the 300mm?

Thanks

OK, the lens I find easily handholdable down to about 1/200 sec. Lower than that, the keeper ratio can suffer. I also do much better with it when it's mounted on MkIIN than 20D. I think the extra camera weight stabilizes it.
I am sure you will enjoy your lens, it's a little delight.;)

Now some more shots. All these were shot today, JPGs, unprocessed, fully handheld.
The first shot at 1/125 sec, the second at 1/200 sec.

As we start shooting around the 1/FL rule and above, one does not have to have an extra steady handhold, so one can start to snap more casually.

This was shot at 400 mm, JPG straight outta MkIIN. The original image then the 100% crop.
I should not need to say that I was on the wrong side of the gull for this shot. If I was shooting his left side, the image would have obviously had a better clarity. But, that's the way the photography cookie crumbles...gotta make the best shot for the conditions.

Petkal, thanks for the pictures.

300mm at 1/125! You do have very steady hands :)

The color saturation is really good. I'm excited, can't wait to get it.

I'll probably use it mostly for sports but will plan to get the extension tubes for flower shots and stuffs. Maybe getting a bird feeder to attract some birds in the back yard. :)

....he should have told you which was his best side! ;)

p.s. the more I shoot birds and fail, the more I appreciate even the ones you say aren't the best...

You should be able to use it for wildlife, portraits/candids, landscape as well.
The only real drawback of the lens is the MFD....2.5 meters. The subsequent IS version was much improved that way.

What is that car? It looks like some sportsy italian futuristic car. I realise I'm fromt he new generation, but I have no idea what that is and am curious.

It's a Superformance Coupe.
Kind of like a kit car.

he he....you are too modest, and I need testosteron injections or something to perk me up:

Just read that seagull post again....how many people can shoot a naked 300 mm prime at 400 mm ? I am becoming senile, god help my poor wife ! :o

I meant to say "shot at 1/400 sec shutter speed".

Judging by your taste in books, arthritis probably plays a large part in the steadiness of your hands...! ;)

Very impressive though.

Bahahahahahaha!

Looks more like the kind of thing some tubby guy makes in his garage from a kit while his too thin and highly strung wife weeps alone over the laundry.

Would she be happier if he spent all his time and money on L glass and honing his PP technique? Probably not.
Husbands without hobbies tend to hangout in bars and chase skirts. She should be happy for what she has:D

And who said I tubby?

Petkal, you know my age (don't want to go throwing #'s out here), and even at my young age I do things like that quite often, so don't feel bad.

Hey, it's not like a really big secret or anything. I just don't like everybody knowing because sometimes you'll say something and because of what people know about you you'll get some not so nice comments if I may word it like that.
