I will be traveling to Hong Kong in a few week. How do prices for Canon lenses and flashes compare to U.S.? Will Canon honor the warranty when I bring them back to U.S.?

In travelling to almost 30 countries in the past 30 years including trips to Hong Kong, it is safe for me to say that it is very difficult to ever beat NYC mail order prices!

And, generally, if YOU purchased overseas (rather than from a gray marketer i your home market) and can prove this with your receipt of purchase, your distributor in your home area will generally honor warantee claims.

Canon lenses and bodies are cheaper in the US than in Hong Kong. Its cheaper to get Sigma/Tamron/Tokina etc. - but for whatever reason, Canon is more expensive here.

You can get a fair idea of prices in this link,...

Are the prices for point & shot cameras be in the same situation for major brands (Canon, Casio, Sony, etc)? HK prices higher than US prices?

To OP: If you have specific items in mind, you could list them here and I will try to look them up for you (to the best I can).

Now, you are not buying stuffs for the entire gang, are you?

Think i read somewhere that with sigma lenses you need to prove that you paid duty and custom when you want to make a claim back at your homeplace even though it has worldwide warranty. But with canon they just require the reciept.

Canon 5D Body
Canon 16-35 L, 50 L, 85 L MK1, 24-105 L IS, Canon Speedlite 550EX
Sigma 70-200 Macro

Yes, that's correct for us UK users:

The same document does not appear on the Sigma US website.

Knowing Canon lenses, extenders and flashes are cheaper in the US, I will take me time and shop for those locally. Just lost the excuse to stock up while in HK :)

Since this thread has started on shopping in HK, I will change the focus a bit to buying P&S. Can you recomend a pocket size (credit card size) unit? Since this is a Canon site, this can be Canon bias.

One friend has just came back from a trip over and told me that prices are similar to here in Spain or a little less only for Canon stuff. No worth and you take many risks. NYC is cheaper.

Cheers
Juan

I got a Canon 70-200mm f/4.0 L in Hong Kong, and ended up saving about $500AUD in comparison to buying it locally so it was a big saving for me. Would anyone have an idea of the best price on a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L in Hong Kong

Zac

I have always been very impressed with the Ixus series. They are easily 'jean pocket' type and have very good features....now it also has IS in the latest models

Why is that?

It seems that every online camera store is from the East Coast. Every time I called one I thought I had just hit the redial button.

6D, 60D, Various L and non-L Lenses and more gear than I have time to use. ;)

For your reference, the price of a 24-70 f2.8L from a HK Canon dealer is around HK$9,780, which is approx. US$1,255.

Rule of thumb when travelling overseas -- know your prices... and B&H is a good starting point. Then be prepared to dig in and negotiate a price that is satisfactory.

As with any store in Asia, once they see a Caucasian (or any tourist for that matter) they see $$$ signs. If you come in with a bullseye painted on your forehead they will definitely aim for it... if you know what I mean.

In my personal experience, I have saved heaps of $$$ by 1) knowing my prices, or knowing what I am willing to pay for an item; 2) bagaining/haggling/negotiating like my life depended on it.

At the end of the day, we (sellers included) are all free to accept or decline what is being offered. If the price points do not meet my needs then I move on with the satisfaction that I was able to sharpen my negotiation skills.

John;)

Believe... Work hard... and it will happen!
