Anyone have a Tamaron 17-50mm F2.8 ?

Still doing research on a first decent low range zoom lens (under $500) for my XTi.

I have read many good things about the Tamaron SP AF 17-50mm 2.8 as an alternative to the Canon 17-40L. Several reviews actually claim it to out performed in sharpness by a small degree.

I'd be interested to hear anyones experience about this lens.

I know my 17-70 is about the same sharpness as the 17-40L F4, even exceeding it slightly, the Tamron is a little sharper still, but you do lose the macro side & build quality isnt as good as Sigma lenses (being fussy here), I have also heard that the AF motor is slightly noiser & hunts a little more, but again we are nitpicking.

The Canon 17-40L F4 would of course have the fastest focussing, but the zoom of just 40 is not very good & F4! too slow.. the Tamron would be much better.

Forgot to add, F2.8 lenses make your viewfinder appear brighter too, another plus..

yea...i was testing it out, and the AF moter is a bit loud...but i dont think hunting is really much of an issue. i guess to each his own??

some people swear by this tammy as a real gem. some other see it as a lens with solid performance at a good price.

go to your local camera shop and test it out.

If I were still shooting the APS sensor, the Tamron would be #1 on my list for a lens.

I am happy with my 17-40mm L but if I was spending again I would give the Tamron a serious try. All you lose I reckon is USM motor and build. For most of us hobbyists build is plenty fit for purpose. Anyway, do a search for the thread saravrose started when she bought one last week. A couple of shots there.

It's an all round excellent lens including portraits which I haven't posted on the internet.If I had to quibble I'd say that colour rendition sometimes leaves a bit to be desired.

I meant to say the hunting was in low light, its probably ok in normal situations, I dont know how accurate the info is though, just passing on what I have heard.

I just got the 17-50 last week and so far am pleased with it.

Going a little off topic here but I heard that Tamron are bringing out an 18-250mm, pretty good idea if the quality is there.

wonderful lens.. found it at a great price and has been treating me incredibly well. I'm thrilled with it..

I have it and really like the optics. The f2.8 is very nice. Build feel and AF noise is so so, but optics are great and the price is right.

I would take the 1750f2.8 over the 1740f4 on a crop body. But I'm holding out for the Tokina 1650f2.8, which is expected to be released anytime from now through 2050. [BIG sigh]
