Hi all......looking at a Tokina 12-24mm here in Oz. Rang the importters and asked to speak with the technical guy re the lens. He was a waste of space and knew buggerall about the lens. My question was...is the Tokina a full frame lens or purpose built digital lens like the Ef-s?....I think its full frame but can someone here who has one please confirm because I want a full frame as Im moving up to a 5 d shortly. Also can anyone give me a call on its optics vs Sigma dg 12-24mm. Ive seen a few reports on them and they seem (Tokina) to be quite a good build and optically whilst not up to the L iare still pretty good at the wide end and similar to Sigma in quality?. Any comments appreciated as Tokina Importer here is sadly lacking in product info

Not absolutely sure, but when I was looking for a wide angle (haven't yet bought one) someone said that it was for the cropped sensor only.

The 1224 Tokina is designed for 1.6x bodies. So it is not a FF-designed lens. But it's not EF-S either since it will mount to a 10D and work fine on that body. For your 5D, you'll want the Sigma 12-24EX, which is a FF lens.

I have this lens And I love it. It is for a cropper like the EF-S and optically it is great and biult like a tank. I belive that the Sigma 10 to 20 is for full frame i belive.

Nah, the Sigma 10-20 is for cropped sensors as well with a EF mount. So it'll work on any canon EF lens but you'll get lots of light falloff on a larger sensor. The Sigma 12-24 is made for FF.

I believe it will work on a FF camera BUT it will have so much Vingretting (lens inside showing on frame) that it would be very usueless. Also it would be more fish eye then wide. So will it work? Yes but will it be worthwhile at all? Absolutely not!

Hadnt thought about the vignetting...good point........only thought about the mounting on a 5d as ef-s cannot mount and thought maybe the Tokina was the same......Maybe I better go and check one out on a full frame.

Not, it´s not a lens designed for a FF body. but

If I remember correctly, in other thread somebody has check it and said that it will work but it´s vignet from 12 until 16-17 mm. Almost half of the focal range !!.

Cheers

It has a EF mount not a EFS mount. I had one, worked really well on my 20D but the 17-40 L works even better and for about $200 more then the Tokina it certainly is the better lens. Used the 17-40 cost about $550 and it will work on a FF camera fairly well if not perfectly and be 10-22 EFS wide on a FF camera! Never mind the images are free of almost all distortion where as the Tokina is guilty of that.

The difference in widness is about 1-2 feet. Step back a foot or two and you basically have the exact same image.

Here are samples I took with this lens before I sold it.

In Sample 1. Note the Curve in the lens by looking at the football goal posts. It's not that bad but it is somthing my replacement doesnt do the 17-40 L.

In Sample 2. Note that this opening was taken right against the wall and the door way was maybe 6 ft away at the most. Impressive.

In Sample 3. My piece of junk work van. Taken only 3-4 ft away at almost dusk. Impressive again.

In Sample 4. Downtown Edmonton, Alberta. Well not exactly, its at the top of the hill and this area is a park. Taken at f4.
