With the PMA coming closer and closer, I want to see if anybody would participate in this purely speculative post on what you think would be the next upgrade to the G5.

I know its silly but its always interesting to know whats on everybodys mind and what crazy ideas they come up with.

Here is my guess:
5 megapixel
A wider angle w/ 5x optical zoom (28-140) f/2.2-3.5
Black
Image Stabilization
Pop-up flash

My dream:
6 megapixel using the same sensor as the 300d
Imagine?? You can't change the lens - but you get the same image quality as an SLR.

Whoever comes closest wins the "PSYCHIC" award come Febuary.

An interesting question. We'll have to dig up this thread in a month or two to see how well we guessed. Here's my take...

I'm thinking that the G-Series body style has run its course. My guess is that Canon will come up with something that looks like the old Pro90, more of a "boxy" look than the rangefinder look of the G3/G5. Sony has the new 828; Minolta has the A1. Nikon & Fuji have theirs, too. It looks like that style is in "style" now.

I'd like to see a 5 or 6 mp CCD (no more than that, please!) with a super-sharp lens. Say 28-200mm or so (like the Sony). Keep the Digic processor and the feature sets of the G3/G5 (especially the unique things like the ND filter).

OK, someone else's turn...

Definately 6mp shades of black with charcoal grey rubber bits and some red, more optical zoom say 6x

I reckon Canon are already thinking the name "G6 is 6mp with a 6x zoom let's call it the 666"

Nickname "the devil" :lol

I would love to see a cross breed between a G and a Leica Digilux2!

Canon : EOS R : 5DIV : 5DS R : 5DIII : 7DII : 40 2.8 : 50 1.4 : 35L : 85L : 100L IS Macro : 135L : 16-35L II : RF-24-105L IS : 70-200L II : 100-400L IS II : 1.4x & 2x TC III : 600EX-RT : 580EX : 430EX : G1XII : Markins Q10 & Q3T : Jobu Gimbal : Manfrotto Underware : etc...

They gotta fix the optical viewfinder being blocked by the lens. I'd predict if they significantly redisign the body, they'll drop the G series name and come up with something new.

Keep the swivel screen

I'd predict 5mp

At least 6x optical zoom. They are a little lagging behind in that department (sony, nikon, fuji, and olympus all have 6x or more in the category)

Digic is here to stay with Canon Powershots...no way they'd drop part of their famed "digital trinity" too much invested in marketing

Find some way to fix the autofocus. Maybe go to a red instead of a blue-green contrast.

FIX THE PROBLEM WITH NOT INTEGRATING WITH THE 420EX!!!

Ok, this has turned into a wish-list as much as a prediction list!

John

I agree. An update of Pro 90 IS would be welcomed and compete against the A1 and Fuji Z series. Canon has great IS lens technology. The only negative is Canon may think that building IS into the camera/lens combo would detract from selling IS lenses for the DRebel and D10 series.

As for predictions, I'll go along with this 2004 Digital Predictions Site: http://www.bythom.com/2004predictions.htm (external link)
that says Canon will introduce a new DSLR between the DRebel and D10. I'd buy that one in a second

Here is my wish list:

1. 6 MP sensor...the 300D's like above. DiGiC Processor - keep.
2. Autofocus that is quick and fast.
3. Black Body.
4. Thread mounts on the front of the lens, so we won't have to buy
an add-on adapter to mount filters.
5. Keep the swivel LCD.
6. Ability to make use of 420EX flash's red light for autofocus.

The Next "G" series

Prediction:

G series will be replaced by new series...

What will stay:

    DiGiC
    hot shoe
    black body

What will go:
internal ND will go (prediction, not a wish)
    flip out LCD
    remote

What will be new/improved:
body style (like high end Fuji), look like SLR w/o the interchangeable lenses
more rubber on lens and body
    8X optical zoom
    faster autofocus
6MP (just shy of the 6.3 in the Rebel)
    pop up flash
    threaded lens for add-on filters
    increased AVI capabilities
    Photoshop Elements

Pricing:
    10-15% more than G5

They may stay with the 5mg or maybe go to 6, But I really think there going to jump on the optical zoom band wagon a try to get something upward to a 10x optical or at least something more than the 4x they have now. and like I said in this thread Canon is supposed to introduce 20 new cameras in 2004

I like the Pro90 spin on it...5mp, 6-8x OZ (starting at 28mm), IS, hot shoe, pc sync, articulating lcd, priced at $750ish.

Why would they release a model between the Rebel and the 10D? Who would it marketed too, the differences between the two would have to be so subtle (they should just do a 20D upgrade to replace the 10D and sell it at $1300) Though I also said why is Canon bothering with the Rebel G2 & Rebel K2 and they sell ok.

I got a novel Idea why don't they come out with a G5 type camera priced more like film cameras say around $250  I think the prices they charge for these is way out of line. It's getting so you pay more for your camera than for your entire computer system

Yeah, you are right, they do cost more than computers. But then, again that is what you get when everyone uses proprietary technology to do essentially the same thing.

I wonder when Microsoft will get into the digital camera market.

Prices are not going to drop with film cameras still in the market.

When film camera becomes obsolete (which is probably around 5 yrs), then we'll see a $250 digital SLR camera.

So digital replaced film............What do you think would replace digital??

If you can guess this......then you will be crowned "SUPER PSYCHIC" :-)

Don't forget that a digital camera IS a computer, and that the image sensor in your digital camera is the equivalent of endless film. If you were to shoot film at the rate you shoot digital, your costs, including development and dead-end prints, would skyrocket too.

Digital still has high R&D costs which film has amortized long ago, so that curve still has a way to go.

Fact is that the people posting and lurking here represent maybe 10% of the market because the majority of consumers want P&S > prints and blame the lab.
