In reading the email you posted I'm wondering...who would be getting the photo? Is it just an everyday Joe Schmoe or will it be given to a Veteran?
If it is just an ordinary civilian, I'd charge for it. As has been said a few times, you can't live on credit alone.
If this is in fact being given to a veteran, someone who was in military service to protect our freedoms then I wouldn't charge.
Either way, I would go ahead and send it in for proper copyright protection in the event of unauthorized publication, seeing as how it has now become a sought after image.
Just my 2 cents
Basically my plan is if it is only being given to vets I let it be used for free. However if he's going to sell it or give it to any one as a promotion then I plan on charging, which is why I was asking what a reasonable figure is.
So how does someone go about copy righting a photo?
Reckon you could post up a thumbnail of the photo in question?
Just curious on what it looks like

Ed
Well, when I say unintentional I meant I didn't go out looking to take a picture of the flag that would look like a flame. I was putting into practice what I had read in Brian Petersons book "Learning to See Creatively" about taking shoots from different perspectives. It wasn't until I got home and was post processing that I really looked at this shot (I shot a bunch as the flag flapped away) and said "Hey! this one looks like a candle flame."
Saw the flame on your flickr. Nice photo. I would let them use it for free if it were mine. I have another job that pays for bread and milk.
I agree - but if someone is going to be profiting off of my hobby I would like more than just credit. As long as its only given to vets and not sold or used in any other way as promotional material then I'm fine with letting them use it for free.
So now I need to know how to go about making a contract or aggreement. Are there standard/sample forms?
