My first "portrait"

Okay, so I wanted to start experimenting with various subject matters. While I love nature photography, I also wanted to try landscapes and portraits. So, here's my first portrait attempt. Keep in mind I'm well aware that the boy in the photo has a goofy face...that's not my fault. Take it up with god. Anyway, I'll have more attempts up here later. C&C welcome!

lacking contrast and exposure is blown. Not tooo goofy a face as far as goofy faces go! :):)

Goofy or not, the face looks out of focus to me. The camera appears to have focused on the hand and the tree. I think moving a bit closer to the subject would've helped.(edit: the composition, not the focus issue.)
