I thought I would share some photos from Friday morning in my yard. We had no electricity from Thursday night until Sunday night and a lot of the area still hasn't any. I live in a suburb of Buffalo. From what I understand, our parks are in ruins. Most of the trees had not even changed color yet but not only did they lose their leaves, they lost their limbs. We lost our Birch trees from the front yard. It looked so erie and is so sad.

The first two are the birch trees in my front yard and the next two are from my back yard.

I sure feel for you. We had this same think almost 10 years ago in Omaha. It took almost a month to clean up and some areas were with out power for 2 plus weeks. The only good thing was you could not go any place and I was snowed in with my girl friend. Only one thing we could do but that a story for someplace else.

Is it not a bit early for that kind of snowfall,or do you usually get it like this in October Carol?

Wow, and I was complaining about barely an inch here last Thursday. Good to see that no branches broke and did any damage to your house or vehicles. It always amazes me how one huge branch manages to break and somehow falls directly on a car.

Carol, I've been thinking of you, knowing what was happening up there. Glad you have power back, and hopefully no major problems. The trees can be replaced, but it is a real shame to lose them. We all have crazy (dangerous) weather from time to time, so I sure feel for you (and everyone else in your region) in this situation.

Thanks for the comments everyone.
Dimitri, I don't ever remember having snow in October before. We occasionally get some in November and always hope to have some for Christmas. January is usually the month we get the most snow. This was a freak storm and the snow is now all melted and it is raining.
Thanks for thinking of me Stan!

I've been thinking about everyone over there! We once got a freak storm on Halloween in '93, it snowed about 16" and shut everything down. It's flurried here in October often but snow like that is very rare!

Sorry about all the devestation to the landscape!

Goodness, and I thought I missed snow! Well it's nice, but a whole winter's worth in one go! I'm glad you have your power back on - ours goes off frequently here, so I know how that is, but with the cold to deal with it must be awful! Welcome back to the land of the living Carol!

Boy oh Boy, you got dumped on...

The bent trees will bounce back, and after a couple of years, will straighten out, for the most part...

Unless they are cracked within the trunk, the branches will regrow and fill in after a few years...neat trim cuts, will save the trees...

Very serious photography there, you know...

PS: I lived in Buffalo, in Cheektowaga, Elma and Depew...on a special job assignement...

Had the very same stuff happen to me here in the Pocono's... 85% of all trees near me lost the top 30% of the main trunk...many had to be cut down, some are filling in, but will never be the same...We had an Ice Storm that brought everything down to the ground...power was out 7 days and out of state utility rescue squads brought us back on line...

Because of this, I now am a proud owner of three chain saws, and several hundred feet of 5 ton belts and chains...Hope never to need them again...

Make the best of the firewood...

All the snow is now melted and it rained all day yesterday. There has been a lot of flooding and so many people have water in their basements because their sump pumps have no electricity to work. We went down to PA for the Penn State game Saturday and bought 2 generators which are at my brothers and brother-in-laws houses.

Our tree is a lost cause. It has no branches that did not break off. John, you must be familiar with Delaware Park. Apparently 95 per cent of the trees there are broken. I live in West Seneca. The Amherst, Williamsville area got the worst of the storm.

My husband had bought a chain saw on Thurday night! It is electric though so he used a hand saw to take down our broken branches.

It's very good, that you got the generators...
My electrician friend offers to install a safety connector/bypass switch along side my main power circuit board...That's yet to be done, but I haven't gotten a generator to date...

The chain saw is a necessity, (the chain will stay sharp if it only makes contact with wood, if it hit's dirt, it will dull in less than two seconds), I had to keep a second saw handy, to free the first saw, if/and when it got stuck in the under or over cuts...

Transit Rd. is where my home office was...(Mader Construction, Signature Homes.)

The photos you have could be forwarded to the daily newspaper, they love to see digital work...Good luck...

The worst snowstorms I've ever experienced have all been in Buffalo! I wasn't sorry to miss this one. Hope everything is ok there!
