Oct 16, 2006 16:11 | #1 this is a picture of a woman in a park i took with my 300mm zoom lens. my question is, is the distortion in the picture commonly reffered to as "digital camera noise"? if not what is it and what causes it. this picture was taken at 300mm at f5.7 at 1/1000 with the ISO1600  HOSTED PHOTO please log in to view hosted photos in full size. I agree it looks like digital noise. It looks like it might have been a little OOF which seems to amplify digital noise. Also, did you shoot in raw or JPEG? The latter could add to the noise (although this crop does not appear to have noticable JPEG artifacts (at least to my eyes on my screen). A bunch of stuff.

Next time if you can open the aperature more and shoot at a lower ISO, you could have shot at iso 800 and had a shutter speed of 1/500 which whould have been enough for 300mm focal length and a lot less noise.
