New 24-70 2.8 L and test shot

I just picked up my new 24-70 2.8 L today. I was very excited because this is the perfect focal length for me. Anyway, here is my first test shot and the first thing I noticed I was worried about. Notice around the top of the white pigeons head, looks like a whole lot of CA to me. I was shooting with the hood on but into the sun. I was using the center focus point on the white bird, also looks like it may have back focused a bit, but I will leave that until I can do further testing.

Looks perfectly acceptable to me. I'd be pleased.

Looks like a light reflection off the water to me. I'd call it a non issue.

Above the head of the white pigeon looks to me like it may be the reflection of the goose neck just above the same pigeon. Take a look under each of the geese. Pretty close to the same reflections on them.

There is noticeable CA in the crop. The head is outlined in orange.

Defintely try it on a non-moving object. Does look like the focus was the feet though.

Some CA wide open is normal. I notice it in all my lens, L or not...

A part of me wants to say...

Yeah, its a crap lens, take it back to the shop and get a 18-55 EF-S Kit lens and just stick with it. Ppl know how crap that lens is so it won't cause a fuss.

I would agree with shooting a still object to test focusing. IMO, the CA is minimal. (And before anyone throws a wobbler and says if I pay $x for an L I expect it to be better!...show me a chart that correlates $x = y performance)

It's definitely CA, and mine suffers from it as well...

But it's minimal, and unless you are pixel-peeping, you won't really notice it much.
Look to the lens' other qualities, and you'll be happier with your purchase.

Send it back and get something MF with some guy's name on it if that's bothering you.
