There is noticeable CA in the crop. The head is outlined in orange.

I had 2 copies of this lens and returned both - CA was only one of the problems I found with it. - Too big. Too heavy. Not good value for money. It did have one good feature - the ability to operate at F2.8 with little loss of IQ and good bokeh. But I thought this was not enough reason for keeping it. It's IQ was worse than an old Canon F3.5 I had been using. Replaced it with 24-105 F4L - very satisfied.

OK, I finally got some time to play today. I had a friend stand for me while I took a couple quick test shots. Here is a 100% crop of a shot I took at 2.8, it shows where the focus point was.

This seems soft to me... Anyone else that is happy with this lens have any samples for me? This is a raw conversion with base settings.

Although I love the fast focus and great color rendition, I cant help but to this most shots are soft.

savone,

i can tell you right now that folks here will say that NO Lens has a problem, yours obviously does, and i also read your post over at FM and you got some realistic replies.
while most here will say no lens has a problem, there are those that quite simply do have issues.
my current 24-70 is very sharp, and it was picked from testing out several copies at my local camera shop. it still needed to be calibrated though and once done it literally blows me away at f/2.8.
when this lens came out i bought one of the first copies and it too was soft like yours. even after calibration it was just so-so.............my shop exchanged it for another and all was well.
right now your copy is showing that AF is pretty much on. can you exchange it?
i know what you are looking for, and while i don't endorse Pixel Peeping, we all do it, especially when checking out a new lens.
looking at small images with any lens will look fine, but as you've obviously seen from the photo above, PP is the only way to tell. also, my current copy of this lens shows no such CA wide open, but my first copy had gobs of it.

This test shot was at 1/400 sec @ 2.8 handheld. I contacted Canon support and to my suprise they agreed with me. They asked me to contact the dealer and see if they would swap it for a new copy. I did call my dealer (calumet in philadelphia) and I am bringing it in for a new copy now. I will test when I get home and post results shortly. I really want to love this lens as the focal length is perfect for my needs. Thanks everyone.

Looks a tad soft to me. I will post some 100% crops when I get home, I guess I am one of the lucky ones with a sharp copy.

Mine's sitting at home now... waitin' to be opened. To say I'm nervous about getting a good copy wouldn't be a lie. Normally I don't succumb to this sort of thing but this'll be the first lens I consciously test.

OK, Well I took a quick ride over to calumet and the folks there were nice enough to swap the lens for me. I just did some tests...

I stood the 24-70 box on end, I place 3 AA batteries on top. On in the front left corner, one in the middle and one in the back right corner. I shot with the camera tripod mounted, mirror lockup on with the self timer.

Focus point is the middle battery and the settings are:

Still looks like it is back focusing, what are the odds its my camera? I will do some testing with another lens and see what happens.

do the same test with your other lenses to see if they are showing backfocus.
my current copy went back to canon for backfocusing, came back sharp as a tack.

Yep, it looks like a little back focusing..
Your best bet is to send both lens AND camera for calibration.

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

I've got the same combo and at f8 at 50mm my 24-70L is just about as sharp as my 50 1.4 with the same settings, and the color/contrast is better with the zoom. I don't have a back-focus issue...I'd venture to guess that sending both in is a good bet...

Ok, I got my lens back from canon today and I am pleasently suprised. They also cleaned, calibrated and upgraded the firmware on my camera for free. Cant complain about that! Anyway, I took a couple of quick shots outside my house, I did not have any time to do any real tests. Here are the results. Both shots are taken wide open:

What do you think? Both of these are jpegs, so they have +1 sharpening applied out of the camera. I had to go to work and did not have time to do RAW conversions!

Great, Savone - that's the kind of results I expect, sharpening or not.
