When I was visiting Jamaica a few months ago, I took some underwater photos with my Powershot A70 and an underwater case. Anyone else have experiences shooting underwater?

I'm too scared to go under the water... I do not need to know what's down there :) These pics look neat though. Love Jamaica too!

Great action photos...I always wondered when someone will post some underwater shots...

It looks like most of us are set back by the $2000-$3000, cost of a trusted underwater digital SLR enclosure.

Besides, the basic requirement would be: need for advanced swimming abilities, scuba lessons, possible certification, and then owning a good camera...

The variables are many, and so few who qualify...

Nice looking photos, in my experiences, having a powerful strobe is almost a necessity. These look great, nice work

I took a lot of pictures while Scuba diving in Freeport, Bahamas last February. I hate to admit it, but these were taken with a $15.95 point and shoot/housing type camera.

You don't have to spend $2k for a digital underwater setup. I shoot underwater with a Nikon 4300 ($399) and waterproof housing ($120). It takes excellent shots, is small enough to carry around comfortably and when I am on land I can take it out of the housing and use it as a carry around camera. YOu can find the housings for many different cameras on Ebay for anywhere from $50 to $150 depending.. The housings for our DSLR's do cost as much as the camera for a decent one, twice as much for a metal one with a million buttons on it...

I scuba also, but have shot some great pics just snorkeling in a few feet of water. Like Nike says... "Just Do It"

Being able to dive and be comfortable in the water makes a big difference.
I have taken Photos underwater as a commercial diver.
using a stand off gauge on Nikonas Mk V, and learning the technique of photomosaic for the inspection of underwater welds is actually what got me into photography in the first place. Also learned how to develop my own film via E6 Colour slide.
Digital has totally changed all that now.

First thing to remember is don't stir up the bottom. Try and achieve neutral bouyancy, watch were you place those fins, there are a lot of delicate creatures and corals that can get destroyed with a misplaced fin kick
second tip is be careful of how you position your strobe.
If you have just stirred up the bottom, you're going to get serious back scatter from the particles in the water.
not to mention Scuba diving and photography makes for a seriously expensive hobby.
Which is why I was fortunate to have it as a cool job. When I used to live in the UK.
