I rarely use the DOF preview button when shooting with flash as it's somewhat annoying for my subjects. So I didn't bother this time and got an amazing shot of the horizon and sky that framed her nicely.

If anyone asks if the 85 1.8 is any good, just see what I stumbled upon with it almost wide open.

Hi Cosworth,

I just got my 85/1.8 last night. My first lens (besides the kit lens).

I am really inspired to see this shot of yours. I hope to get shots like this too (not just "head and shoulders")

Thanks!

-Sam

As you can see it does vignette on full frame with a polarizer. A thin polarizer is best bet for this lens if you so choose.

I think the ever so slight vignetting adds to the "character" of the shot. Nicely done.

If you're using a speedlite, you can use C.Fn-06 on the flash to turn off the annoying "modeling" light when DOF is previewed.

Sure can. But I need the modelling flash for other things and I'm too lazy to do it for my portraits.

I shoot horizons all day. I get tired of doing it. Sounds bad but I only fix the really bad ones. I wish I could automate it or pay someone $0.01 per shot to do it...
