I am confused....how is it difficult..dont you just twist it on like all others?

It does twist on like the others, but it is a fairly tight fit. I second the use of the hood from the 24/1.4 on the 16-35 or 17-40 on APS-C (350D, 20D, etc.) cameras. It provides better protection and does not vignette on those cameras.

if your bothered by people looking at you...then you might be in trouble..lol

I would rather use the hood and even though alot of times its not doing anything....those few times it does its job is worth it

But if the sun is outside the frame and still shines on the front element, it will generate internal reflections in the lens. It may result in visible flare, it may weaken contrast, or it may not have any visible effect at all.

I agree with this, but a quick wave of the hand in front will indicate whether this is happening.

Chicks dig nice hoods. :)

I don't agree with this!

If we had anything resembling sun today, I'd do a comparison.

my old 20D swong around my neck with a 17 - 40 attached. I was scaling some slippy rocks in the river. The camera and lens swong round fast and hit the lens front on. The hood was on and it just bounced back with no damage. use the hood!!

well i dont know about all hoods...but my 70-200f4 had a felt iner lining..that would stop any reflections and be absorbed into that black felt....most hoods have a flat black inner to stop reflections

I know. I've missed a lot of potentially good shots because I've been too self conscious, especially in crowds in third world countries.

If you have an 1.6 crop body (300D, 350D, 400D, D30, D60, 10D, 20D, 20Da, 30D), or a 1.3 crop camera (1D, 1D II, 1D II N), buy for the 17-40 the EW-83DII hood which is made for the 24 f/1.4L. It's marvelous! Not only it is cool, it is long, and narrow, so it won't take much space in a bag, and it is NOT useless... It protects the front element, and it is very hard when it is on, that is, it's not easy to move, difficult to miss the lens on the front element and get the element damaged, that is, if the ground is just straight. :)

I have used the 17-40 with the standard EW-83E... YUCK!
I have used the 17-40 with the EW-83DII... SUPERB!

I recommend it, it does work.

BUT you have to know how to use it, it is a little difficult hood... Very stiff if you do hold the hood, if you just rotate, it fits in place very nicely.

This is good advice, but I hate to tell ya, but I am shooting the 17-40 on a 5D as my ultrawide......

For those 'adapting' the 17-40 to a crop camera, ithe 83DII hood is good stuff. Also consider the 17-55's hood. These hoods are actually useful, see my comments about standard zoom hoods.

Thanks for reminding me, I should put the 24-105's hood on the 17-40 when shooting it on my 1.3X 1D.

I don't think that the 350D's viewfinder is nearly large enough to fully see the effects unless they are severe. Even the 5D's viewfinder, as big as it is, won't show the full effect.

I'd prefer something closer to a final-print size or larger.

I could be wrong, but I think I remember reading that the EW 83DII hood can be used on the 16-35/17-40 on the 1.3X cameras as well. Not sure though, so test it before shooting for effect.

Cool, thanks. I just don't want to pony up another $50 for something of questionable value (at least to me).

Hoods rock just for the fact that they give better contrast and color. Plain and simple. Fact that they protect and pull in chicks is just a bonus!

I really don't want to attract the type of girl who would be turned on by a lens hood.

Well, if you don't already have one, and the 24-105 hood works, it may not be worthwhile to make the change. I doubt that there's much difference in coverage given that both are effective on a 24 mm lens on full-frame.
