I decided to do get in some practice for this Saturday's Boston POTN Meet, which is going to be a night shoot. I had actually wanted to get in some experimentation, but I ran out of time, since I got out late and have to work for a living.

This was one of my pratice/experiment shots, though I haven't really experimented with it yet. I want to test a few different HDR programs on this shot, as well as some serious testing with the number of required shots. And I meant to play with the 20D's Long Exposure Noise Reduction, but I totally forgot. So I guess I have to go out again this week....

So, this is an HDR of 7 exposures, each taken 1 stop apart. That's extreme - Duder has me convinced that I have to try 3 shots, 2 exposures apart, which is what I will be playing with later this week. I'm worried about that, though, since I think that the lights will still be blown out - many of these are even with a 6-stop range. But tomorrow, if I get a chance, I'll pick 3 shots that are 2 stops apart and try it. Check for a thread in Post Processing within the next week - I'll try to post a thread or two about Night HDR shots.

Tired of reading? Here's the shot:

Just to give a comparison, here's the best single shot out of the 7:

There's something to that HDR stuff, I think. Though I'm sure that Photoshop could have pulled a good shot out of that single exposure, I'm one that likes to play with the most image possible. Besides, PS wouldn't have really toned down those lights, and that's one of my primary goals with night HDR.

Tamron 28-75 @ 28mm, f/11, 7 exposures from 1/6 sec to 20 seconds.

Looks top notch on my monitor and I'll for sure be curious on the 3 shot comparison to this.

Well, I feel compelled to point out that I'd never claim 3 exposures, 2 stops apart, is the best option for all HDR's, but it's most suitable for the majority of brightly lit daylight scenes. I've also produced many HDR's from 5 or 6 expsoures where the situation warranted it (usually by exposing for the highlights and working backward until you acheive good shadow detail).
I haven't myself even really attempted night-time HDR's yet, and I expect I would do what I said previously and expose for the highlights and work backward, however many shots that turned out to be.

seems to me you got a pretty good result using 7.

My best HDR result was with 3 manual exposures. luckily there was no movement in cars, clouds etc in the landscape. The 3 shots were miles apart too +/- 3 or more stops.

I love these shots. Have to try HDR on Neon.

when you take these multiple exposures, are the stops the only thing your changing?

Yes, exactly. Take a look at this tutorial: http://backingwinds.blogspot.com …fessional-hdr-images.html (external link)

Sorry man, I didn't mean to blame you or anything. :-) I just find your HDRs to be stunning, and I know you do most with 3 exposures.

Thanks for the comments folks!

Nice work Scottes...

I never had thought of trying HDR for night shots before.

The one thought I have with the long exposure noise is, what would happen if you shot your lower light shot with a higher ISO (400 or so)

And then shot the neon at 100 iso.. I wonder how much less (or more) noise would end up in the shot?

I just might have to try that.

That's great, Scott! I would love to try some HDR shots, but I'll have to invest in CR2 first! BTW... that's one of my favorite restaurants!

Great job! I have found that for nighttime HDR more stops are warrented. I with I could AEB more than 3 shots at a time...
