I am looking at purchasing this lens. I have been doing some research on it for a few days. For the most part everyone loves this lens. I believe that this lens will fit perfectly into my style of portraiture. I mainly use my Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 for portraiture. I love it, but find myself shooting mainly around 85mm to 100mm and would like to carry a lighter option.

What is my question? Well, from many of the reveiws I have read it seems as though CA is the only real issue with this lens. How bad is the CA. I would LOVE to see some examples. I am also up for sugestions of lenses in the same mm range, compactness and price range. I do not want a zoom. Canon 100mm 2.8 Macro may still be an option, but leaning toward the 85mm.

Your help will be greatly appreciated!

PS:
Oh and I also checked out the Lens Sticky, but not many images with it. Plus I would like to se what kinda CA is happening.

Can't say as I've ever experienced CA with my 85/1.8. Of course I almost always stop it down some (my theory being that most lenses are not their best wide open). I absolutely love this lens. I kept it over the 100/2 I had for a while. It's a great portrait and walkaround lens.

Here are some shots taken with this lens:

I have experienced (at times) some very minor CA when shooting at 1.8 or 2.0. At least in my case, hardly enough for me to even think twice about. I've been using the lens for years, it's excellent in all respects.

Thanks KIDPOWER! Can you share an example?

i have a brand new 85 sitting at home...
but having bought my first dslr...
it might be some time before i can give any lens a good test on it's limitations.

Currently:
Canon EOS 30D | 5D | EF 85mm f/1.8 USM | EF 24-105/4L IS USM | EF 70-200/2.8 IS USM | Speedlite 430EX

No worries! I would love to see images with it. Even if not polished. ;)

Here you go. First one with speedlite on my 5D + 85mm 1.8.

Second one with 5D outside, sadly no flash to fill eyes.

Again with 5D + speedlite.

And one to show how good the bokeh is on this lens.

One slightly further back (feet zoom!)

I hope this helps. I love this lens. It lives on my 5D now, and I have a 50mm 1.8 and a 27 - 70mm L and at the moment it is my short lens of preference. Also comes in handy when I am covering football/soccer as an ambience lens/short action lens due to the speed.

Pete.

What is my question? Well, from many of the reveiws I have read it seems as though CA is the only real issue with this lens.

In my expereince all lenses, L or not, have some CA wide open, particularly in high contrast areas. Both the 85 1.8 and 85L have it. Nothing problematic unless you pixel peep, and easy to correct.

I love my 85 1.8 lens. Light, small, sharp even wide open, fast AF, inexpensive...

Canon EOS 5D, 20D
Canon 35 f1.4L, 50 f1.4, 85 f1.8, 135 f2L,
17-40 f4L, 24-70 f2.8L, 70-200 f2.8L IS

The CA on my 85 f1.8 isn't noticeable except in very extreme conditions. I dare say you won't notice it either.

Kool! Sounds like a plan! If it is minor I can fix it.
