wow....all I can say is wow. I just went to fedex to pick up a package that just so happened to contain the 85L f/1.2 markI and I am thoroughly blown away. I had high expectations--both about the gorgeous looks of the lens itself and even higher expectations of the results I can get with this lens. Well, wouldn't you know it...the day the lens comes is one of the darkest, dreariest, rainiest day we've had in a long time. Not the best weather to test out a new lens. Well considering this lens is so fast, I still took a couple outside in the nastiness and I'm just floored by it's performance.

So no one would be dissapointed, I knew I needed a duck shot or a cat shot...I chose the latter as my house comes equipped with a cat. Here's a sample of what that baby can do. Here's a quick sample shot or two.

First shot was from a raw file just to change the WB, resize, and run noise ninja real quick. Certainly not a great shot considering focal plane is off just a bit, but still shows you what this lens can do in portraiture and providing bokeh. second shot is jpeg straight from camera. Both shots taken on 5D.

oh, and sorry about the eyeball snot on my cat. didn't realize it was there till I reviewed the shots.

Edit: aaaand I spelled "unbelievable" wrong in the title of this thread. DOH!

oh, and the "slow focus" IS JUST FINE. unless you were a sports shooter, you are just looking for something to dislike if you complain about the speed of this lens. I have no problem with the spee at all. . .

just for fun here's this one too. was testing bokeh and just loving those lovely SOFT round glowly dots that are lights. mmmmmmmmmm....buttery.

again, horrible composition and all that and the mask is actually a bit out of focus....but it's the bokeh that I bought this lens for and the bokeh that has already blown my mind.

jpeg straight from camera. only resized.

oh...and those lights are only a foot or so from the mask. now that's bokeh.

These shots are DREADFUL!

Everyone harps on the AF speed of the 1.2's and it's good to hear otherwise as this will probably be my first big dollar prime lens purchase.

Could you compare the AF to any other more popular lenses in terms of speed and accuracy?

thank you sir. from you, it means a lot!
or should it mean less considering you have experienced the new L feeling sooooooo many times? :p

and you'll be happy to know that this has now convinced me that I must arm myself with the canon holy trinity.

one last one. cropped a bit.

oh yeah, this lens is a beast....but in a wonderful way. aside from that it has the best lens hood I've ever use. Why canon doesn't have snap-on lens hoods like that for all there lens? I'll never know.

Maybe tomorrow there'll actually be a little sun or something other than a cat to take a picture of.

wow...now that I look at a couple of those on a different monitor...it appears my next purchase should be a monitor calibration system.

sorry about that.

If anyone has any specific shots or tests they'd like me to take with this lens, just let me know!
