You now seem to have the weird 'way too shallow' DOF disease so loved by fast L owners. Some call it creative I call it wrong. Like in number 1 the nose, left eye and ears of the poor sweet Kitty are all OOF. You stop down a tad and focus on the nose well the shot will look so much better. Enjoy your new purchase tho'.

hahahaha...thanks condyk. I must admit, I do have that disease right now, however that's just because this is my first time playing with a 1.2 lens. I will not be one of those people who only uses this lens on 1.2. I do understand the importance of background in a photo. At the same time, this lens can produce a magical effect with a head of an animal or person in focus floating in the air next to all those buttery smooth out of focus other things...now that's pop! don't worry though condyk....sometimes I may crank it all the way down to 1.4. :p

edit: oh and yes, i know the kitty in the first picture is out of focus...I even mentioned that in the first post. purely just playing around, obviously not a technically special photo in any way.

Most people when they get this lens like to post pics at 1.2 and I was the same when I got mine. But this lens is also great stopped down and still has IMO a magical quality about it.
This is a pic of my daughter at f/2.2 or 2.6 can't remember but just an example.

This effect is beautiful...but the cost of these lenses are out of this world and 99% of photographers will never get to use something like this.

I realize that this will probably get some negative responses but without too much skill involved one can do this in PhotoShop and you could not tell the difference. So for all of us that will never own such a fine piece of equipment we can still get the same results.

hahha....while this lens is expensive...it's not THAT bad. this is not the mark II version which costs ~$2000. I chose to buy a used copy (made in 2004) of the Mark I version instead for around $1300.

I do a agree that not a lot of photographers will ever get to use this lens, but I must say that I strongly disagree that you can replicate this effect to a degree that "you could not tell the difference." While I am the first to admit my photoshop skills are not the greatest, I am yet to have seen a photoshopped bokeh that looks as good and (relatively) natural as on the 85L.

These shots are DREADFUL!

the background is completely out of focus, you need to adjust the aperture so the f-stop is around f8:lol:
(Im just jealous!;) )

That pic was taken with the 85L, the 85 1.8 is no slouch but the bokeh and colours IMO are not as nice as the "L"
