Wow! Looks like she's popping out of my monitor! I am gonna selling all of my lens to get this baby!

Most people when they get this lens like to post pics at 1.2 and I was the same when I got mine. But this lens is also great stopped down and still has IMO a magical quality about it.
This is a pic of my daughter at f/2.2 or 2.6 can't remember but just an example.

Cathpah,

You said that I can test all your lens right? I am going to have to find some times and take a drive up to Madison and check out this beauty! Awesome pics by the way, the DOF is so amazing.

That pic was taken with the 85L, the 85 1.8 is no slouch but the bokeh and colours IMO are not as nice as the "L"

Dan

i see from ur sig that you have or had a f/1.8. do you have any sample pics of that lens stopped down?

This is pic of my daughter using the 85 1.8, not sure of settings as I am at work. Have a look at my website and the pics from the Western Fair of my wife and kids on the rides are with the 85 1.8

sounds like a plan. you'll have to hurry though....In January the fiancee and I are going to be embarking on a 6 month trip to India and SE asia and thereafter are moving to Bocas Del Toro, Panama (an archipelago in the carribean on the panamanian cost right near the costa rican border). :)

haha...don't worry about hijacking this thread. ALLLL 85L threads seem to turn into 85 f/1.2 vs 85 f/1.8

I honestly don't know how you sold it. must've been really pining away for something good. Now that I own this lens, it shall never leave my side again.

I don't mind that you ask about the 1.8 and mr. clark is certainly welcome to answer that request, but if you are interested in the differences between the 85's (1.2 & 1.8 ) there are a million threads on it with many pictures as examples so you may find the answers you are looking for there.

thank you sir. from you, it means a lot!
or should it mean less considering you have experienced the new L feeling sooooooo many times? :p

and you'll be happy to know that this has now convinced me that I must arm myself with the canon holy trinity.

Cathpath, a good lens that keg is , but it's not some sort of reliquia nor a magic wand. It does not get you any special photo-social status either because every Tom, Dante and Harry seem to have one these days. It does not mean a thing in terms of so called "trinity completion" because the 35L and the 135L are completely different lenses, completely unconnected with the 85L save that ubiquitous red band on the barrel.

The lens can indeed be used very effectively in many diverse applications, well beyond the stereotypical photography of your human or feline/canine babe's portrait with only their left eye in focus.;)

Thus, turbocharge your photography imagination with it and enjoy.:)

Like in number 1 the nose, left eye and ears of the poor sweet Kitty are all OOF. You stop down a tad and focus on the nose well the shot will look so much better.

You'll still have plenty of "bokeh" to go around, as well. Yes, it's nice how sharp this lens is, even at 1.2, but you'll rarely find a need to go that wide, I'd think.

Oh Ron...you're no fun! ;) I'm just playing around with this ridiculous depth of field (or lack thereof). like you haven't taken silly test shots with your lenses before just to see their limits.

haha...I don't expect it to be a magic wand petkal! Just another tool of the trade that will help allow me to capture a photo as I see it in my head. The only reason I said I must now venture forth to complete the trinity was because I have seen the quality of this prime and am amazed. They are obviously very different lenses with different uses and avantages/disadvantages.

oh....and call my photography stereotypical will ya? these are just crappy old test shots, remember? I've seen some mighty average ducks that you've shot too. :p

And judging by these two samples, I think you are getting your money's worth out of the keg.:D Good concepts and execution, methinks.
