[i]I went to the CES (consumer electronic show) today and if you can be patient I would hold up on any purchase of DSLR or other video equipment. There is a ton of new products on demo there & if anyone does not know about this event it is one of the largest displays of electronic equipment put on display.

I went to the Canon booth & asked a rep directly is the 10D outdated & of course with a smile he said if I'm happy with it & it can do everything I need it to do no, so yes there is something on the horizon and no one is saying anything until the PMA next month. So if you don't need it I would wait until mid feb. to see what Canon has coming out. He woulld not even say if the 10D has another year on the shelf. Of course if I wanted to keep my job I would beat around the bush also.

I'm totally Pro Canon even though I own and still use a Olympus 2.1mb from a couple of years ago but I went to every booth that had anything to do with photography and there is some serious stuff about to hit the market. My reecommendation is to save Tax returns hold of for at least a month before dumping any $$ on DSLR bodies.

Hopefully this will help some as for me I'm happy with the 10D and have not put it to it's full use yet so I'll just keep what I got and buy another lense or two L's of course. ;)

Spoke to the Canon Rep. here in the UK at the NEC AutoSport Show (biggest motorsport show in UK).

He was in the press area drumming up business for Canon (as you would expect he had all the big Canon primes for motorsport).

Anyway, I was chatting to him about this and that and a subtle as you like slipped in the "replacement dslr" question. I was slick and cool as a cucumber. But he clammed up after I uttered the first words "So, what about...." :)

He said, "I can't say anything, you know I can't say anything, so I'm not saying anything." But he did say that do not buy a 1D or a even a 1Ds in the next few weeks, unless of course you do need it right now for your work. He wouldn't say any more than that. I even bought him a pint at lunchtime, but that didn't help. :D

Anyway, got to spend five minutes with a Canon 400mm f/2.8 L IS USM. My god what a beauty and it is by far the most heavy lens I've held.

Cheers

Ian

I know only one thing for certain ~ whatever will be will be a surprise. Think 300D, how many were surprised by so many things about that rollout. Now that there's a frenzy on the higher digital end, I bet we will be taken aback, not just Canon but everyone. Safe bet. Also, think about what 20 new models means. Across the spectrum. Hmm, how much are those vegas tix.

My guess is that no one at the that reps level knows anything. Otherwise it'd be out.

bannedPermanent ban

*looks at $1000 bill for best buy*

*shrugs*

My drebel will take good pictures for years to come.

In all honesty i think the larger revolutions generally come in lenses, i can slap a $5,000 lens on my 35mm rebel and take a better picture then a $200 lens on my $1000 Drebel.

Some cool insight though.

The EOS 1D definitely "will" be replaced and the official announcement will be made at the PMA, or shortly before. The EOS 10D and the Digital Rebel definitely "will not" be replaced at this years PMA, but I would imagine the 10D replacement will be sometime later this year.

I have this information from our local Canon Rep. as of this afternoon. This is all he could or would, tell me. I would imagine that the 1D replacement will be enough of a camera to sufficiently put the damper on all the excitement that Nikon users have had with their new D2H.

Anyhow, thought I'd post this info for you. BTW. There is a shortage of 10D Cameras right now because of brisk Xmas sales, they should begin hitting the stores again by Feb. or so.

Announcing a replacement for the 10D now could clobber both current 10D and DRebel sales. The 10Ds currently coming off of the line would not sell because people would wait for the new one. And there are many people who cannot afford a 10D, but who may soon buy a DRebel instead. If they found out that a 10D replacement model were coming out soon, many would not buy the DRebel but instead wait for the inevitable price drop on both current left-over 10Ds, and used ones.

Yes, but are there 10D's coming off the line ? Looking at 10D availability it appears they're becoming ever more scarce.. To me it appears they've cut back production drastically.. (Perhaps they've stopped production already).

But who knows.. Canon sure is good at being tight lipped.. :)

Pure Speculation - A 20 Mega Pixel Sensor

To All,

I think this web-link provides some information that may answer the question. I would speculate that Canon will be comming out with a 20 Mega Pixel sensor, probably for the 1D series.

Don't know what that means for the 10D. Possibly a full frame sensor. Anyway, I currently have the 10D and will still to it for some time.

Jim_T Canon has allways had trouble filling orders for the 10D (and now Drebel) price point DSLRs... First was the D30,. then D60 and 10D,. attaining on was allways luck,. In fact last April when I got my 10D it was a miracle at the time,. there were iterally NONE available ANYWHERE online.. (i happended to find one in a Best Buy)

It is post christmas,. and once again,. slaes outstripped expectations for 10D and 300D... so they are hard to find.

Supply for the 10D was FAR, FAR better than for the D60. Ordering online in March from B&H (or anywhere else) was hard. I preordered mine from a local shop *the day before* the cameras were shipped to *any* outlet. I got my camera the next day. :P

I would expect the supply for the next set of cameras will only be better.
