Bad Influence

I have got to stop following POTN. You guys give me too many ideas.

I just placed my order for the 70-200 f/4L. I am currently renting a 70-200 f/2.8L IS. The lens is great, but after using it for a while I have decided the f/4 is better for my shooting. Most my shots are on a tripod, at f/8 or above. In fact, I found my photos from the first day using the lens were not as good as usual - I was playing with the large apertures, and the IS. After that I went back to my normal shooting routines and have been pleased with the lens. Decided the f/4 was plenty for me.

Now I get to play the waiting game. At least I have the rental for another week - my f/4 should arrive before I have to return the rental.

why stop there when you can get a 500mm f/4L?? Imagine the shots you could get with that lens....wow...

I'm just glad you do not see much discussion on the "Sigmonster" on this board - that could really give me ideas! Now that I think about it....

Don't compromise on reach with the 500mm, get the 600mm

You guys referring to the 50-500mm Bigma? or that 800mm Sigma monster?

800 all the way! Does Canon still make the 1200? I thought it was discontinued. It sure would be fun though!

Strange to say, but it's nice to see someone moving "backwards" to the F/4 version.

I got a bit of time. Next will be a 100 macro, then a 400 and a 20. It's after that I will be in trouble - I have always wanted a 300 f/2.8.

Funny thing - I rented the f/2.8 IS thinking that was the lens for me. After a couple days I was leaning towards the f/4. I let it sit for a while longer, thought about pros and cons. Net is, for my shooting style f/4 it is. Of course, all that is forgotten when it comes to the 300 - 2.8 all the way!

Well, the 70-200 /f4 arrived today. After playing around with the 70-200 /f2.8 IS for a couple weeks, I have to admit I really like the smaller size. I do mainly nature shots, involving a lot of walking. I already drag the tripod, my neck was getting sore from the f/2.8. I am really going to enjoy the f/4.

I took a couple photos this evening, but will not get a chance to really put it through its' paces until this weekend. From my initial playing, it appears to focus every bit as quickly as the f/2.8. Note that this was on items with enough contrast that the cross-sensor AF probably would not have made any difference.

Congrats on the new lens. It's a tough battle to keep the credit cards in the wallet sometimes. I have the new rebate saved on my computer at home . . . and at work. I'm not saying I'm going to use it, but I'm prepared to use it twice.
