Has anyone tried any of the cheaper IR filters that are found on ebay? There's the suntec ones as well as an unbranded one:

At about 1/4 of a Hoya R72, how do they perform? Also, what cut off wavelength would you recommend for general landscapes?

I'm planning to use my 17-40 for some IR shots, there's a gel holder at the back of the lens are there IR gels I could use instead?

I don't have experience shooting IR with dSLR, but I seem to recall reading that not all sensors even do a reasonable job of IR photography and many digital cameras have to be specially modified in order to use them for IR (unlike shooting IR film)
