To get the best out of a lens you should always use the hood., particularly with this lens which does not have a recessed front element. Having said that it will be OK to not have a hood if no light direct from the light sorce is falling on the front element, but that is quite restricting. Gear List

I've used the lens quite a bit this weekend and, although I've gotten a bit of flair when the lens is perpendicular to the sun, I'm mostly using it at 1.1 or more with a full set of extension tubes. At least until I get a flash bracket, I'm afraid the hood would block most of my flash light. Plus the hood might scare the bugs as I have to get so close anyway! For the most part, flair hasn't been a problem, but I am nervous using it unprotected. A UV filter might be a good compromise. I guess I'll see if they do ... You don't need the hood for flash work unless you are balancing with ambient light in, which case you can't as it gets in the way. Gear List

The 100mm Macro hood appears to only be as wide as it is to clear the switches when mounted in reverse. I kaNt sPeL...
