Only if one wishes to protect their lens and avoid stray light.

To get the best out of a lens you should always use the hood., particularly with this lens which does not have a recessed front element. Having said that it will be OK to not have a hood if no light direct from the light sorce is falling on the front element, but that is quite restricting.

I'm not sure if a hood would work real well for me. I've used the lens quite a bit this weekend and, although I've gotten a bit of flair when the lens is perpendicular to the sun, I'm mostly using it at 1.1 or more with a full set of extension tubes. At least until I get a flash bracket, I'm afraid the hood would block most of my flash light. Plus the hood might scare the bugs as I have to get so close anyway! For the most part, flair hasn't been a problem, but I am nervous using it unprotected. A UV filter might be a good compromise.

I have some old sigma hoods that look like they might fit. I guess I'll see if they do ...

You can always take a hood off if you have one. You can't ever put it on if you don't have it. Choice is good.

You don't need the hood for flash work unless you are balancing with ambient light in, which case you can't as it gets in the way.

If I am working at 1:1 in ambient light I often use the hood from the EF-S 60mm macro which is much shorter, as a compromise.

My buddy has my 75-300 IS USM, but from what I can tell that hood may also work if you own that lens. The 100mm Macro hood appears to only be as wide as it is to clear the switches when mounted in reverse.

Seeing that both lenses are 58mm this may work...

As a bonus it's lens case No. LP1219 is the same as the 24-70L, great for me. I can only ever be using one of those lenses so they get to share a case. My 24-70L pretty much lives on my camera anyhow.

I kaNt sPeL...
