I only had a small window of time to grab these in the dark with a flash. It seems to me a good concept but these just don't "work". The back ground is definitely wrong. I also simply desaturated due to limited PS skills. Any ideas or comments.

The first one looks great. My dog does this all the time, and you're lucky to get a good background.

I like the weaving of paws in #1 - very neat.

The only "wrong" thing I see with the background is that it's reflective and as a result the light corner (upper left) competes with your subject. But I like the bit of texture in it and that it doesn't have a pattern.

Perhaps the same shot without flash?

Thanks for looking. I agree the flash was a bit much but it was 2 in the morning and everyone was trying to sleep not that the flash helped them but I was afraid the pup would have stirred if I started moving lights around.

Was the flash straight on? Did you try bouncing it? Or if it's the on-camera flash, diffusing it (even a few squares of toilet paper will do the trick). :)

I tried this a while back. A different approach. Hope you don't mind me posting it here.

It was a 580x pretty straight on as she was on the floor near no walls and the cieling bounce didn't cut it. I set exposure comp on the flash at -2/3 but you are right a diffuser would have been good. I am hoping for a daylight repeat I just need to keep an eye on her.

Very nice image but not what I saw in my head. I liked the geometric look plus the black and white and that was what I was trying. If I had better exposed it I may be happier with it. Thanks for shareing.

The 580 is a fabulous flash. It comes with a very cool little feature - a bounce card. It's the little white card tucked in behind the wide panel.

Just for you - a quick comparison of shots with a most interesting subject - a 1/2 empty water bottle that happened to be in my studio.

Bounce Card:

Thanks for the nice examples Athena. I admit idly did not try the bounce card. For some reason positive comp did not come to mind for the ceiling bounce. It seems I always turn my flash down not up.
