DIY an umbrella as a reflector is fairly simple.
1. Just use an umbrella that have silver face inside.
2. Cut the "handrail" of the umbrella.
3. A wireless trigger, use the 4 channel China made is alright.
4. A stand that can spread widely to support different angel when using...

Cost(HK$): Umbrella $10 + 4 channel trigger $100 + Stand $80 + Mutil-angle setting $90 = HK$280

Here is my DIY Umberlla for my 580EX flash:

Attach the 4 channel trigger onto the flash, then connect it to the tripod by a ball head...

nice effort. I was thinking you spent way too much to acheive what could be bought relatively cheap here)about $100.00 US, until I did the exchange rate math... It works out to about $36.00 American so nice work. The photo is great too... the girl is very pretty.

Welcome to POTN.

Always appreciate people with a DIY-mentalility.

About the test photo, may be that's what you want in terms of the lighting effect. Personally, I find the lighting is a bit too harsh. It could be the distance of the 580 to the subject was relative close. The output almost seems like it was taken with direct flash.

any old brolly can be used. open it up, spray inside with adhesive, cover with thin mylar like that used in party ballons. could also use shiny silver spray paint but may be a bit stiff at first.

You could, but umbrellas are so cheap now, i don't know if it's worth all the effort.

I'm not sure either Bobby.

I don't know the size of that umbrella but it appears as if you're taken what could be an apparently large, soft light source and created a high contrast light source with a hard shadow edge.

I don't know if that's the look you wanted.

Keep in mind the OP started this thread over four years ago. I'm not really sure what prices were back then, but he used some items he already had to save some money. He took a regular umbrella (used in the rain) and cut the shaft to use as a bounce umbrella for photography.

I've done that, the rain umbrellas with silver lining work pretty good!

Oops. every so often I seen active thread and don't even think to look at the date of the original post.
