Took some shots of my 16 year-old brother-in-law, Ian. Used my newly-acquired Canon Rebel XT. The lighting ins't consistent because I was trying different settings and such. I am aware of the shadows on the wall, but they don't particularly bother me, so I rarely worry about them.

what kind of lighting did you use? if you change your mind about the shadows, that can be helped by moving him further from the wall. like the compositions of #3 and #5.

The pictures without the harsh shadows definitely look more "professional"

Cheers,

Tom

Depends. I've seen harsh lighting and shadows like that in portfolios and people are proud of those shots =) Depends what you're going for!

Take a look at JT's album cover....

Yeah, I agree that high contrast lighting and shadows can work wonderfully in many situations - I just don't think this is one of them! Its just a big flat shadow on a solid white background. Not even dramatic...nor does it add anything to the shot...its just there. I wouldnt be so hard on him, except he obviously knows why its there, so its just there out of laziness :D

On the other hand, I think shots #4 and #5 look great.

*Ahem* He is a she ;)
As I said, i'm still familiarizing myself with the camera. I wasn't being lazy, I was just more intent in studying the lighting on the subject. I know how why there are shadows and I know how not to get them.
