Hi All,

New to the site, i just purchased the new EOS Rebel Xti from DELL and choose the kit that comes with the lense. but i've been reading a lot that the lense that came with it is no good. now im thinking of calling them and holding off the order and just getting the body instead. I'm new to DSLR and this is my first one, perhaps you guys can help me in choosing an inexpensive lense for everyday use. im gonna be using it on special occasions maybe. any suggestion will be a great help in making my decision on what lense to get.

Thank You

well its good lens to use if its your first DSLR to get use to the camera...its not to bad if you stop it down some. I say use that for a while before making the leap into better lens

My gear

R7, 7D, Canon RF 14-35 f4L, Canon RF 50 1.8 STM, Tamron 70-200 G2, Canon 100-400LII, Canon EF-RF

Welcome. Starting off with a new DSLR is exciting. But I don't see why you can't get good shots with the kit lens. It's fairly cheap probably considering it's bundled with your camera. I would get the kit lens and use it for a while. You will learn a lot with it. Sure it's not the best lens out there, but that doesn't mean you can't get great shots with it. Don't rush to buy new lenses. Practice with your new camera and this lens.

Hey, I am with the others here, Just use the 18-55 kit lens for a while, until you figure out what your shooting style and needs are. The kit lens is not bad, especially nice at, around f/7.1 - f/8, Enjoy and welcome aboard! :)

Sigma 17-70 would be nice if you want to get a new lens right away. But I was very pleased with the kit lens for a long time =)

yea..stick with the kit lens. im sorta bangin' my head for not taking the kit lens when i had the opportunity. it's a cheap lens, but it takes decent pictures and also teaches you to expand your skills by adjusting to its limitations. i currently only have the 85/1.8, which i got since it's gonna be something i'll use a lot over the next few months.

i'll be shopping for the kit lens, or maybe the 50/1.8 to experiment a bit. i still need an indoor/close-range lens...heh

I was pretty happy with the kit lens while I learned the camera. I could do everything that I wanted with it and it took decent shots. I used the lens for 7 months before buying others to ensure that I enjoyed working with photography and as a learner lens. I figured that if I could take a good shot with it, the other lenses would be a piece of cake to learn.

My second lens was a 50mm; a recommendation as a great picture for portraits.

I used the kit lens for the first year I had the camera. It's pretty hard to beat the price and it gives you time to decide what you like to photograph so you can make a more informed decision on future lens purchases. There are some excellent shots people have taken with this lens. I know there was a tread where people posted their kit lens shots and they were surprisingly good.

Stacie is right about the 50mm. For about $70 it will give you more options to go with your kit lens.

The kit lens is not bad at all. I've been shooting SLR for 5 years, but I'm still new to digital. After about 6-7 months with my 350D, I still use my 18-55, and it serves me well. Though I am looking to up grade, but only because I think I'm ready for it.

I'm just trying to say, if you're new to DSLR's assuming that means SLR's too, then take some time to learn the camera and basics of compostion, exposure, DOF, motion blur, etc. before you jump into spending hundreds, even thousands on lenses :)
