My first outing with a new 5D & 17-40 f4 L.
Shot at day break .. sun not yet showing itself but bathing the
harbour in a strange even light.
No filters, grads etc.
Thanks for viewing and commenting.
Paul
PS .. Perhaps you're right and the frame is rubbish .. anyway worth a try.

No, the frame doesn't do alot for me, but it's not that aspect of the image that lets it down so much.

I find the softness throughout the image a little disstracting, and the crooked horizion.

But, the composition is spot on, love the colour of the water, I'd definately go back for a re-try, maybe when you have a nice sky too ;)

I'm no master by any means, but that's just my opinion and thoughts buddy :)

All the best

Thanks for your comments Dan.
As I said there was a strange even light that morning and it has been captured reasonably well.
The true horizon is level. What you might be looking at is the curve of Shandwick Bay.
I have printed this A3 and am very well pleased with the performance of the 5D and and the lens. The detail is excellent.
Thanks again.

Nice. Flat sky is part of life that you good guys have or need to learn and deal with. You did great with land. Would a polarizer helped the water?

Hi Samsen
This was my first set of shots with a new camera and new lens.
I have a bag full of filters etc but simply wanted to see what the camera could do on its
own.
This was a 6 second exposure at f22 and before the sun showed .. left of picture.
Sun light was coming from below the horizon, reflecting off the mist and clouds and producing this flat even lighting.
I'm really pleased with the 5D and the lens.
Now that I am coming to grips with the camera, its possibilities and limitations I shall
be shooting as normal .. ND grads, CP's etc.
Thanks for stopping by and your comments.

I'm a 17-40 fan myself, and it must be interesting seeing it at on a full-frame body as it is around 28mm equivalent on my 350D. Was your camera before the 5D a crop one?

Hi John
I have a 10D also but use a Tamron 11-18 0n that camera, so the effect is very much the same. Bye the way the Tamron is an excellent lens.
Thanks for looking.

I missed this one Paul.
Love your comp.,hate your horizon (its not straight mate) and it seems that you`ve lost lots of IQ from downsizing.

Anyway,i did a search in your posts because you said you couldn`t view my pictures but you could see them when i attach them to posts of others.

Here you go then, here is a link of one of my latests, tell me if you can see it.

The horizon looks a tad crooked but not by much, could just be trickery. I like the compositon and light you've captured, I'd like to see this image underexposed a bit more too. I think a full rez image would be quite sharp, there's been alot of loss from compressing it for web.

I would like to see that, and bad luck about the timing of the lens arrival as it would have been great to have for the meet.

Thanks for all your comments .. please don't forget that this was just a trial for new gear ..
Now I can assure you all that the horizon is level and straight .. what you can see are the hills on the other side of the firth .. also Shandwick Bay is curved .. a neighbour of mine who a good photographer always gets thrown by Nigg Hill and Shandwick Bay, it's like an optical illustion .. never seems right when in fact it really is .. I use the measuring tool in every shot to achieve this ..

From this shot I printed my first A3 from this camera and lens .. it just sang .. Now mounted, framed and on sale in my local outlet .. local people buy this sort of thing ..

Dimitri .. Yes I can see your shot .. (as with others I have viewed the subject matter doesn't get me going but your handling of the situation is very good) .. now I know what others are talking about .. Poor old Paul .. I feel so left out .. can't anybody solve this problem?

The horizon is straight, I think the curve of the land/sea-line on the top right gives the appearance of being off.

Good composition, but as you acknowledged, it was taken without filters, and cries out for a ND grad.

There are patches of softness particularly on the jetty wall (left), possibly due to noise reduction, I've noticed noise ninja and neat image on occasion have this effect

Canon 1DS MKIII,7D, 85 1.2L, 24 F1.4L, 135 F2L, 200mm F2.8L,50mm F1.4, 120-300 F2.8, 12-24mm f 4.5

its a nice shot, i like that gradient across the water...the horizon is straight, note the vertical post at the end of the harbour, and the railings below it:) either way, thats not important, enjoy your new camera! now show us what it can really do;)
