You have a flash! Use the pop-up, it does great fill-in, and it is easy to dial in a little flash exposure comp, to make it less harsh.

Nice pics!

Do NOT use the built in flash. It will destroy the lighting & give you flat lighting. Instead, use a reflector. Even just a large piece of white cardboard would have helped your images. Better would be buying a reflector with white on one side and gold, or silver, on the other side. Use a reflector to one side and reflect light back into faces.

They looks a bit blue. Might try adjusting the white balance. When you're at the park shooting the kids, feel free to use the pop-up flash. It's a whole lot easier than dragging a reflector along!

A bunch of stuff.

Actually, I've successfully used the built in popup flash as fill flash. All you have to do is dial down the camera's FEC and it should do ok. It also seems as if your white balance was set to tungsten here or something similar as there is a blueish tinge to the photos.

I'm with dogface. Family first, photography second--especially when you've got such winners to enjoy. The popup flash might not be as good as carting along a reflector, but it's better than nothing. Experiment and pick the best--then claim you planned it all along!

All I want is a 10-2000 f/0.5L with no distortion that weighs 100 grams, fits in my pocket, and costs $300. Is that too much to ask?

The pop-up certainly can be harsh, but as day-time fill is is not too intrusive, and you can dial it down with flash exposure comp anyway. you can also get little diffusers that fit over the pop up, or even make your own with tissue paper or anything really..

I pretty much only use the pop-up for fill, and am happy with it - after all it's there for a reason. I do prefer my speedlite tho, and am currently trying to decide between a 580and 430 EX as an upgrade.

Reflectors do get a more pleasing light, certainly, but are a fiddle to carry and use, and hardly make for spontaneity, unless perhaps you have someone holding it for you. I have one but have never managed to get results on the fly with it. Probably poor technique - but as I said, fill-flash rescues the situation often enough.
