Carzee, this is great. I love the b&w and the expression...it's just great. (probably one of my fav. b&w portraits I've seen in ages)

Thx Permagrin. I saw him (with some others) against this dark green canvas backdrop near the horse exercise area. The light coloured hat against the bgd made up my mind for me. I had a window of about 30 seconds. I went straight up and asked to take his pic and he asked which paper I was from or something like that. I was shooting sort of toward the sun but he's squinting from the light off the yard rails and stuff behind me.

I like it. His expression adds quite a bit to the shot and the black and white conversion works well.

The idea is great. However, the image is a bit too dark and way too muddy. It has mostly mid-tones and almost no blacks or whites. Please re-do with much more contrast and range.

I disagree with the previous comment...it's great.
Carzee, did you offer to give him a print? That's definitely a cool environmental type (even though you can't see his environment, the hat/clothes go a long way in setting the tone) portrait.

Did edit #2.
Used PS on it. Tried a dupl layer overlay in 'burn' mode; lightened it a lot but... nah, something not right. I trashed that and then did a image adj for shadow/highlights. Again it lightened/cleared the face. Gotta ask. Is there a better way? Paining a mask and then brushing away some like when you want to bring out cloud outlines/textures in a landscape?
