The first four are a barn owl and the last three are a barking owl. From today's POTN visit to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. So great to get this close to them. In the eye in shot 4 you can see the sky and a shadowed area - probably a fellow POTN member.

All shot with the 70-200 IS.

I'm only starting to realise this myself just now. The place we went too is somewhere I haven't been to in 30 or so years. Will certainly be back again soon now though.

Hi Shay it was with the 70-200 IS. I started the day with the 24-105 but quickly realised that I was always shooting at 105 so I swapped.

I like no. 4 the most in the Barn Owl series. We have some captive Barn Owls up here but no Barking Owls. I can imagine how it got its name.

Thanks nitefrogger, mmm located on the other side of the world to you I think. But you are more than welcome to visit:grin:. We have a group of POTNer's here in Brissie that meet about once a month - at least so far. Here's a Google Earth Placemark of Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary (external link), it should open up in Google Earth and zoom in to the area, though there is not much to see it will give you a idea where we are. I live about 1/2 hr drive from Lone Pine (traffic being nice to me that is).

Thanks. I haven't heard the Barking Owl call but it supposedly resembles the bark of a small dog. They also have another call which is more like a woman screaming. Very frightening from what I've heard, but its very uncommon for people to hear this call.
