For those in the USA, Adray's has the new 7-2f4IS http://www.adraycamera.com …tion=VIEWPROD&ProdID=2266 (external link)

I called to confirm and they do have some. This is good news as they're starting to come in.

Unstoppable F. Jojo, thru your insider's industry ...er..."contacts" ...have you been able to find out the street availability date for the 50f/1.2 ?

I even called Canon Canada Sales the other day and they could (would) not tell me.

Only for the first couple of months, Pooch man. After that it'll stagnate on the 85L sales volume level, I reckon.

i was talking about the 70-200L F4 IS and i'm pretty sure mr. clean was too. there are only two lenses that come close to the new 70-200L (70-300s) and neither is an L.

and i believe this is the first lens with 4-stop IS. so let's see.

legendary canon 70-200L IQ. 4-stop IS. blazing fast ring USM (nothing else can touch it). weather sealing. half the weight of the f2.8 IS. ahhhh, and it's a canon L lens.

i think the guys who want this lens are willing to pay much more if need be but of course i would be willing to pay less :D .

Awlright....however, your lens will face a very stiff competition from within the family...the non-IS f/4.0 version first and foremost. There are many people who are not too eager to get the IS, thus they will go the economy route which will still offer as good if not better optical performance.
Those, however, who have a healthier gear budget will probably go the all the way to the "heavyweight" option .....the f/2.8 IS.

I do think the new zoom will probably turn out to be an excellent lens, just that in my mind it is not ideally positioned pricewise. That 70-200 niche is getting very congested.

i don't think price is the hook for most. i think features and size will sell this lens.

you have plenty of guys who own two zooms in this range -- a light one and a heavy one. i think this lens will bridge the gap for most of us who don't need f2.8.

also, you are a "buy the best and buy the most" type guy so even if you aren't aware of it you'd be hardpressed to get too excited about an f4 zoom :D .

Well, I am "excited" about the new lens, please do not get me wrong. Weather I want it or not, I am very happy to see Canon thrusting ahead with excellent new lenses in the past couple of years (60, 10-20, 24-105, 17-55, 70-200 f/4IS, 50 f/1.2). Perhaps it is just that I do not value the IS feature as much as some others might, perhaps I am not concerned too much about the weight of a lens as long as it's under about 1.5 kg.

Granted, a light-weight 70-200 zoom does benefit one when travelling and/or hiking extensively and such. After all, that's why I've got the 70-200 f/4.

Oh I'm sure they will, there's always a buyer out there. For an extra 700 bucks compared to the non IS version though I think I'd pass. I mean geez, it's still f4, it's not even fast.:p

I have the f/2.8 non-IS for the aforementioned reason: IS Cost effectivenes (to me)=IS utility/IS $ increment, was not high enough.

Well, Poochman, you should know that most of those f/4 lenses are just a transient stop on the path towards the f/2.8 version. The f/4 non-IS has done splendidly that way, a remarkably high value lens for the economy-minded folks and/or EOS novices. However, the IS version has gone a bit haywire pricewise, I must say.

Sorry to disappoint, my friend. I have no "insider" information on the release of the 50f1.2. I reckon, however, that it won't be much longer if the f4IS is making its way out now. So you gonna' be adding an 11th L to your modest collection of glass?

Thanx Jo, if you wanna be precise about it, I think it's more like 16th ;) (alas, had to divest myself of the 24 TS the other day while the return period was still on:cry: )

i rest my case :D . it would never occur to you that someone would own an f4 lens because that's all they wanted or needed and maybe they prefered a lighter lens?

so what's your take on guys who buy third party lenses :D ? they must be a rung lower, eh :D ?

i wouldn't own two 70-200s and i'll bet plenty of other guys wouldn't either. i just want one that could stay on my bag when not being used. not a light and heavy version of basically the same thing.

maybe if i were a pro or really needed a specialized lens for a particular type of photography that would be different, but i'm not.

i'm a minimalist when it comes to gear.

i own five lenses now which will probably be cut down to 3 or 4 before i ever own 6. i carry all my lenses with me when i am shooting.

there's never any guesswork to what i will need to pack.
