It's a great lens for field sports, but a bit long for indoors. I've used it for volleyball "sportraits," but find it a bit long for action shots. My preference for indoor sports are the 85mm f/1.8 and the 100mm f/2. When using the 200L for night time field sports, I've never felt that the fixed focal length was much of a handicap, really, as I can use foot zoom on the sidelines. I now use the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 with the 200L on another camera body. While the zoom is very good, I feel that the prime is much sharper.

It does seem a little too short at times, and not long enough at other times..for highschool football. However, if you stand between the 20 and the endzone, or at back of the endzone when a team is in the redzone, it can be long enough..with a crop body, like the 30D.
Here's one I took this past Friday night, 30D with 200 f/2.8L

Only processing was some redeye correction, cause I was using flash.

However, I found it too long for endzone shots. Maybe I'll use two bodie next time, the other with a 24-70..or short zoom for endzone.

Last Friday was my first night with the 200 2.8. I'd been using the 70-200 f/2.8, but wanted something lighter, faster AF..etc. I think you have the right idea, to use two bodies, one with zoom, one with prime. I'll try that next Friday.

Our last night game was on Friday, so all I have left are daytime high school playoff and college games. :)
