So, I'm looking at the nifty fifty lens, for a faster lens and people say its really good with low light, I thought you would want a longer shutter with low light. Maybe they don't mean at f/1.4 but it confused me.

you're getting confused between aperture and shutter.

search "understanding exposure" on here and you'll find a wealth of information.

You want larger aperture - meaning lower f stop number. 50 1.8 is much better in low light than the kit lens 18-55 f3.5, for instance. Search the forum for aperture.

Hopefully I can add less confusion for you.
Yes in lower light you need a longer shutter speed or a higher ISO or a wider (larger aperature). Remember that aperatures are fractional so f:8 (1/8) is larger than f:22 (1/22). So a faster lens will let you use a faster shutter speed than a slower lens and thus you can hand hold or stop action. Think of it as a bucket of water you need to fill you can open a tap wider (faster lens) for a shorter time to get that bucket you need.

Yeah I noticed with the kit lens you can't go below f/5.0 at times

I get aperture, I read understanding exposure I was just confused.

When they say "better for low light" they mean it'll let you get shutter speeds you can handhold and/or stop movement with unless it's EXTREMELY dark where even that won't work. It's a subjective description.

The nifty fifty is the Canon ef-50 f1.8 lens. They can be had new for about $80. Try B&H, Adorama. You can also find them used in the Marketplace forum. The faster the lens (lower f number) the more light it lets in. The more light that your sensor receives, the less time the shutter has to be open to let that light in. The faster your shutter speed, the less likelyhood of camera shake.

May I suggest that you use more descriptive subject lines when you make a post? Currently, your subject lines are terribly vague and don't let people know right up front what subject you're inquiring about.
