So, I'm looking at the nifty fifty lens, for a faster lens and people say its really good with low light, I thought you would want a longer shutter with low light. Maybe they don't mean at f/1.4 but it confused me.

It's a subjective description. Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here

They can be had new for about $80. Try B&H, Adorama. You can also find them used in the Marketplace forum. The faster the lens (lower f number) the more light it lets in. The more light that your sensor receives, the less time the shutter has to be open to let that light in. The faster your shutter speed, the less likelyhood of camera shake.
