I read the first post, and without even looking at the name knew it was Petkal. Superb job my friend, so are we on for this weekend? Just sent sugarzebra a pm, seems as if he was away. I may be shooting down at high parks with a friend Friday.

Wow, love the new perspectives! Never seen birds look so big and intimidating advancing towards the camera like you get in #2. And the fish is amazingly sharp!

Now I just need a weather-sealed rig so I don't get pigeon slime on my precious glass ;)

Thank you for your Field Trial, great info and great images. I'm off to my local lens vendor now -
I've so far made do with 17mm but realize it's time to take the step to a proper birding lens. :)

No sweat Fretty, I have seen several excellent close up duck shots from you in the past.;) That one included. I may be old, but I never forget a good shot !

It is interesting to observe the distortion that happens at 10mm, as it is shown on this shot. Unfortunately, the bird's right hand flank has fallen shorter than the MFD so the lens could not focus any more.
That is one of the limitations of both 10-22 and 15 FE, the MFD is around 25 cm or so, can't remember the exact numbers off the cuff.

No doubt, a macro lens would do better that way, except they ain't wide enough.;) However, that's another lens field test for another day......100 f/2.8 vs. 180L :comparison of their capabilities for bird in flight and bird macro photography. Stay tuned.:D

I don't suppose it would even work with a 12mm extension tube, would it? If so, then maybe you can take care of that MFD problem. ;)

Furtermore, so as to conclude with my own remarks, the 15mm FE poses some unique compositional challenges because of its design FOV space curving. Thus, it is often difficult to avoid grotesque distortions at extreme close up distances to the subject.
The original (uncropped) image below illustrates that. Again, the 1.6 FOVCF camera was used ( 20D).

Birds eat mcdonalds? It's so bad for us, I can't imagine how much bad it could do for them. Poor guys, I think when we go shooting we should bring some birdie food along just for them :). Might help us get some shots too (well, we might only be getting shots of them pecking away at a feast if we do that, haha.)
