My friend is buying the 24-70 Online tonight and asked me what was the best UV filter for the buck to get for the lens. A friend of hers told her that it didn't matter if she got a cheap one but is that true? Can you reccomend a good one that isn't too expensive or do you need to spend a lot on one?

20D, 17-85 kit lens, 70-200 F4, 50 1.4, Amvona AT CF 994 Tripod, Manrotto Monopod that I have never used and a 580EX Flash

If you're going to buy a UV filter for a pricey lens like the 24-70, you'll definitely want to get the best available. It would be foolish to put a $10 piece of glass in front of such a brilliant lens. Hoya or B+W are often the most recommended on this forum. I'm quite happy with my Hoyas.

Good luck making a decision.

One of these will do a good job:

Personally I don't use these much and rely on a hood instead. However, if you use a filter, B+W (MRC) are very good.

B+W or Heliopan would be my personal choice, multi coated of course :)

I use Hoya 77mm UV Pro 1 Digital Multi-Coated Glass Filter, on all my lens and I've been very happy todate.

I would also recomend the Hoya 77mm Circular Polarizer (S-HMC) Super Multi-Coated Glass Filter - Thin

Also when looking for a filter glass for 24mm an wider get thinest glass filter possible.

Don't buy third party off brand filters. Get a Canon UV filter for a Canon lens.

or, just skip it, and buy a circular polarizer instead. Money better spent. Just my opinion though...some may disagree.

I can't see why - apart from being hard to obtain, these are not advertised as being particularly suitable for digital cameras. Are they multi coated? why are they better than heliopan or hoya or B+W? Even Sigma produces an EX range of filters!

I'm one of those. A circular polariser should only be used for certain reasons - landscape photography mainly, when you need the effect. why would anyone leave it on the lens all the time, you just lose 1-2 stops of light. If you're suggesting to use no filters at all, leave the lens naked until and unless you want the CP - that's different.
But this is a pro thread , not asking should I use one, but which one should I use!

FWIW I use Hoya pro-1D multicoated UV filters on all my lenses, to keep the front elements clean and free of scratches. No hood will do that. You will not read a thread posted by a filter user moaning about a scratched lens.

That's just about the last brand you want... Canon's are typically Tiffen... Which typically suck. ;)

Off brand? Heliopan and B+W use glass from Zeiss, Schott and Schneider and their rings are brass, not aluminum. They are vastly superior to Canon's filters.

I switched from some off-brand to a B+W 77mm for my 300 f4L, and could see noticable improvements in some circumstances (the off-brand one had definitely introduced reproducable visible artifact, mainly in the background, in some combinations of aperture and background; the B+W does not). Spend the money on a good filter if you're going to use one.
