I was a second shooter in my first wedding yesterday. So today I am playing around in photoshop-which picture do you guys like best. I used a fill layer in the second but is there some way to make it a softer focus with out the fill layer? I would love comments and critiques- thanks!

Gaussian blur will make it softer focus. One technique I've heard of (but haven't really played with) is to do the blur on another layer, then paint the layer mask to selectively choose where to be sharp.

The second shot is too low-contrast on my monitor; it looks washed out.

All I want is a 10-2000 f/0.5L with no distortion that weighs 100 grams, fits in my pocket, and costs $300. Is that too much to ask?

they have to be sharp to start with. If it is, you should use your history brush to bring back the softness in the eyes, lips and maybe hair. That being said I'm not sure that this photo would benefit from a soft focus effect. Some Don't.
