to carry your camera mounted on your tripod (like over your shoulder)? I've seen people do it and it seems awfully convenient, but I can't bring myself to do it for fear that it will somehow fall off! I have a great tripod, but for some reason can't seem to put that much trust in it.

How about you - do you carry your camera attached to your tripod?

Yes, all the time. I can't be bothered by removing it every time I want to move from one location to another (while I'm hiking). Once I get in my car, the camera comes off and goes in the bag until I reach my next destination.

Not a good idea if your camera body is plastic. I did this with my old Canon A2, and cracked the area around the tripod stud. If the camera is titanium, or some other metal alloy, then it might be OK. However, having said that, remember -- we do not have eyes in the back of our heads, and it is really easy to whack a low hanging tree limb or an overhanging rock. My compromise is using good quality Bogan (Manfrotto) "Quick Release Plates" on all my gear. Choose good quality ones made of metal, preferably with an "auto latch" feature. This can get expensive if you have a couple of setups, but keeping my 100-400L IS safe is worth the trouble!:)

I use a quick release mount. Not very rigid a connection but it is very convenient... Have two plates with it. One onthe camera and one on the telelens ring.

Thanks everyone for your responses. :)

I have a 20D and a 5D, so no plastic body. Safe there.

My tripod is a Manfrotto 3001BPRO (has a nice pad on it even) and I use the 488RC2 head with mulitple quick release plates. So it sounds like my gear is up to the task - its just me that's too skiddish...
