And the crazy thing is that the prices are high in Denmark but in Sweden even higher.

The EF-S 60 cost $497 in Denmark but $572 in Sweden.

And the 5D even crazier. In Denmark $3275 in Sweden £3863.

Now that would be crazy! ;)

You know, I hate to pay the prices we pay! Wow...

the mtf (which I realizes isn't the "be all and end all" of tests but still shows a lot) is quite excellent on the 60mm macro and w/a 1.6x crop would be a very nice length for portraits..

Grab the one in 100mm range for the better working distance, IQ is beside the point with these Macros, as they are all that good.
Did you read Jrabin's excellent FAQ on buying a Macro based on working distance? It's in the "EF Lens FAQ" Sticky thread

I read the sticky and did a search and I also read some other thread. ;) I've been here long enough to know people will yell "Do a search/look at the sticky!"

I might out of curiosity.

And wow, I've mainly spoken about photo related stuff in this thread today. Amazing!

Don't worry. By the time people start dropping in again to check on where this thread has managed to go next, we'll be on to something new, and few go back to catch up on what they may have missed.

Btw, I blame Yoda for making me want a macro again.

Blame assigned and accepted. ;)

I used to work at a place that was tremendously good at assigning blame. Nobody ever solved the problem, but as long as blame was assigned, all was good

There's also the tokina macro, which is supposed to be good.

Btw. the canon 100mm and the tamron 90mm, I'd take the tamron every time. I've used both and the tamron actually focus locks faster (if you aren't using manual focus) and has better color saturation. IMO anyway. The only caveat I have against the 60, is the standard "what if you go FF"? Lightstream said he loved the lens but that was the thing that bothered him the most was that he couldn't use it on his 1D or 5D (both of which he hadn't considered getting when he bought the 60 originally). I think he actually converted it (or was considering converting it)...(insane that he is...)

I think the 5D didn't even exist at the time I added this lens to the bag.. that's why I went EF-S. 1-series was a pipe dream at that time. THANKS CALICOKAT :D (for making it happen way ahead of schedule)

The conversion was done and shots were fired, nearly took out my 5D's mirror, made cojones of steel shrink quite a bit, but the mirror clearance is just fine on the 1D, and I'll generalize that to 1.3X crop if the mirror was kept the same across the 1D successors.

I take the blame for this too :p

A few random thoughts on my macros....

My macro largely pulls product photography duty, or as a short telephoto at normal working ranges. Rare, but it happens. Or, as a document photocopier when I need one in a pinch. So minimum working distance is not a consideration for me, however I did read J Rabin's excellent sticky (that's how I found it wasn't an issue for me ;) ). Usually, stationary objects don't run away when I stick the rig in their face, and if they do, blue tack is more important than a longer lens ;) of course I am aware WD is important to other folks though, particularly those whose subjects are generally not so cooperative and cannot be blue-tacked into place..

100mm is about 'right' for me and doesn't force me to back off too far when I then want to transition into full-size shots of the product. BTW, I shoot small objects, the largest being lens-sized, not large ones. Am aware 'product' can extend to car photography with softbox the size of a small house..

Internal focus (IF) - I could probably get by with an extending barrel however it makes it very annoying after I am used to a non-extending barrel. For those who shoot live subjects, the extending barrel often makes the subject go "Uh oh, trouble's coming". It also makes focusing much slower as the motor has to rack the barrel back and forth.

USM drive - first speed, second full-time-manual (FTM). If the AF engine misses, which it can and will, you do want to be able to step in and correct it by hand. At macro ranges I find the 350D misses a lot more than at normal working ranges, which is not surprising considering the AF engine is optimized for normal shooting and not dedicated to macro. You can grab and twist the focus ring at any time without having to set the lens to manual. Even when it's moving. I seldom use FTM on my other lenses which have it because AF is generally very reliable, but on the 60 macro I use it a lot. The only other time I use it is to 'guide' my long telephotos. Never use it on the std. zoom or wide angle.

50 f/1.8 can be put out of a job, no kidding. Unless you want the additional 1 and 1/3rd stop of light it provides, then keep it. But I just sold my own 50 a short while ago. The 60 is quite capable of doing that.

Sigma 50 f/2.8 - dealer tried to tempt me into this. It's not bad for the price but I haven't had time to seriously look into its quality. Lacks FTM and IF

Tamron 90 f/2.8 - forgot all about this one till PG brought it back up again. I have issues with Tamron so I am not going to buy this one blind until I can shoot it in the field

60 2.8 - MTF chart is *PHENOMENAL*. There are only a handful of lenses with an MTF chart that looks this good, and those tend to all be big, white, f/2.8, and 300mm or longer. No kidding. Canon's biggest guns. While MTF is not the be-all-end-all, and real world performance matters, this probably hints at why the 60 macro makes ALL my other lenses stay up at night and worry about 'how sharp'. I on the other hand sleep well and don't even think about it because I know it will deliver the goods when the chips are down ;)

100 2.8 - seems nice enough but very big. Size is a concern. I may end up going for broke and buying this one anyway. I'm tired of buying other 'intermediate' lenses along the way, being disappointed, reselling at a loss and eventually stepping up to what I wanted in the first place despite finding reasons why I didn't want it along the way.

Longer than 100mm macro - not on my scope, due to cost, size and no necessity.

BTW, for the really broke, you can build a surprisingly good macro lens capable of greater than 1:1 reproduction ratio for $40. I built my EOS FD Macro for the staggering total of $40. Search for the "EOS FD Macro" thread (you can put the quotes in the search box, it helps narrow down the results). You get a fixed aperture, well, as fixed as blue tack will make it, manual focus (but this is not such a disability anyway), no infinity focus, but surprisingly good quality.

Be prepared to glue stuff and shop on ebay though..... :D
